US President Donald Trump has announced that the Department of Education's student loans and nutrition programs will be transferred to other departments.
US President Donald Trump announced on March 21 that key programs within the Department of Education, including student loans and nutrition programs, will be transferred to other departments in an effort to close the agency.
Specifically, student loans will be transferred to the Small Business Administration (SBA), while special needs and nutrition assistance programs will be administered by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

President Trump said that with a very large loan portfolio, this transfer will be done immediately and will be led by SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler.
The Department of Education currently administers more than $1.6 trillion in student loans for about 44 million recipients.
The White House previously announced that the department would continue to administer student loans and Pell Grants.
Over the past two months, the Trump administration has implemented a series of government reforms, including cuts to the federal workforce and a conservative agenda. Shutting down the Department of Education has always been a key part of his agenda. However, to complete the shutdown, President Trump needs congressional support, which he has not yet obtained.
Along with the program transfers, the Trump administration has also laid off half of the Education Department’s staff. Democrats and supporters of the department say the department provides essential services to students and protects civil rights. But the White House has called the department a waste of money and pointed to poor test scores and low literacy rates among children as evidence of the agency’s ineffectiveness.
SBA Administrator Loeffler welcomed President Donald Trump’s decision, saying the SBA is ready to take on the responsibility of managing student loans. The SBA also announced that it will reduce its workforce by 43% to cope with the new workload. Experts say the transfer of loan management could be difficult for borrowers, especially as millions of people are behind on their payments and could default in the near future.
The White House said it would seek to dismantle the Department of Education while protecting functions vital to students and families, such as student loans, special needs programs and nutrition. President Trump said special needs and nutrition programs would be absorbed by the Department of Health and Human Services.
