In 2024, fresh coconut and coconut product exports exceeded 1 billion USD, which is also the highest figure in the past 14 years.

According to the General Department of Customs, by the end of 2024, fresh coconut exports reached 390 million USD, an increase of 61% over the same period last year. In total, fresh coconut and coconut products exports reached nearly 1.1 billion USD, an increase of over 20% compared to 2023. This is the first time in 14 years that coconuts have brought in a turnover of billions of USD for Vietnam.

Coconut exports hit 14-year high

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the country currently has 200,000 hectares of coconut trees, with an annual output of 2 million tons. One-third of the area meets organic standards according to US and European standards, mainly in the Central region and the Mekong Delta. Ben Tre coconuts have been granted geographical indications, with 133 growing area codes and more than 8,300 hectares for export.

With more than 600 manufacturing and processing enterprises, the Vietnamese coconut industry has a competitive advantage in the international market. Vietnam ranks 4th in coconut exports in Asia-Pacific and 5th in the world.

China is the main export market, accounting for 25% of Vietnam's coconut export value. The signing of the Official Import Protocol between the two countries in August 2024 opens up great opportunities for this fruit. Vietnam is currently the third largest coconut supplier to China, with more than 20% market share in this country. In addition to China, thanks to its price advantage and sweet taste, Vietnamese coconuts are popular in many markets such as the EU, the US, Canada and South Korea.

Despite earning billions of dollars from exports, this figure still does not fully reflect the potential and advantages of the Vietnamese coconut industry. Mr. Cao Ba Dang Khoa - General Secretary of the Vietnam Coconut Association - said that many fresh coconut orders cannot be exported on time due to the lack of growing area codes, packaging codes and unstable raw material areas from the third and fourth quarters of 2024 until now. Therefore, the Vietnam Coconut Association has asked the authorities to discuss with the Chinese side to grant Vietnam additional growing area codes.

According to the Department of International Cooperation (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), currently there are 225 countries in the world that need to import coconut products, but up to now, only 179 countries have this product for export, of which 5-6 countries have an export output of over 90% (led by the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and the Netherlands). This shows the great potential of the Vietnamese coconut processing and export industry.

For sustainable development, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will coordinate with units to implement solutions to perfect investment support policies. In addition, it will create favorable conditions for infrastructure, supply chain connection, brand building, market expansion, ensuring sustainable and effective development of the Vietnamese coconut industry.
