On May 22, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction issued a document requesting the Department of Natural Resources and Environment and the People's Committees of districts, towns, and Thu Duc City to strengthen inspection and supervision of wastewater treatment of production and business establishments before discharging into the drainage system.
In particular, the Department of Construction noted that special attention should be paid to restaurants and food establishments. This move was made after the Ho Chi Minh City Technical Infrastructure Management Center reported that during the dredging process of the drainage system, grease was still found in the sewers, affecting drainage capacity.
Environmental workers scoop grease from sewers in Ho Chi Minh City.
According to previous instructions from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, during the maintenance and dredging of the drainage system, if restaurant owners are found to have not installed a grease trap before connecting to the drainage system, the maintenance unit will coordinate with local authorities to handle the situation.
Ho Chi Minh City has entered the rainy season, flooding has recurred on many streets, disrupting people's lives. The cause of flooding is due to the lack of investment in the drainage system, overload, but also partly due to people's awareness. The situation of dumping garbage, packaging, and grease directly into the sewers is not uncommon, but the punishment has not been given due attention, not enough to deter.
