Travel trends 2025: tourists gradually abandon luxurious, crowded places

Việt NamViệt Nam21/10/2024

Instead of the trend of spending a lot on tourism like the post-pandemic period, in 2025, tourists will tend to go to places where they have to pay less.

63% of 25,000 travelers surveyed from 19 countries said they would visit a less crowded destination on their next trip. Flight searches on Expedia from September 1, 2023 to August 31, 2024 show that the top 10 destinations that travelers are increasingly interested in include lesser-known destinations such as Reims, Brescia, Cozumel and Waikato.

Many destinations around the world are becoming overcrowded, says James Marshall, vice president of air travel at Expedia. As a result, travelers are looking for something different. They want to go further afield, to find comparable destinations that are not yet explored by many people.

United Airlines said earlier this month that it would expand international service to Senegal, Greenland and Mongolia next year to attract passenger interest. Travelers have been to Paris, Rome and Madrid many times, so they are looking for something different, said Patrick Quayle, the airline’s global network and alliance planning manager.

Another reason travelers are choosing less crowded destinations, according to Expedia Chief Commercial Officer Greg Schulze, is that they are cheaper and more relaxing. Travel prices have risen in recent years. Alternative destinations offer similar experiences, but better, for less money. Travel influencers are also starting to show interest in new destinations, rather than reviewing the same ones.

A report from Booking released on October 16th indicated that by 2025, travelers will have “increasing demands for unique, authentic experiences”. The survey was conducted by the Netherlands-based booking app with nearly 28,000 people from 33 countries and territories. 67% of respondents said they would choose less crowded destinations.

The top 10 trending destinations chosen by Booking customers for next year include Sanya, China; Trieste, Italy; Joao Pessoa, Brazil; Tromso, Norway; Willemstad, Curaçao; Tignes, France; San Pedro de Atacama, Chile; Naha and Okinawa, Japan; Villajoyosa, Spain; Houston, USA.

Expedia sees 2025 as the year of Jomo, or “the joy of missing out,” a lifestyle that allows travelers to focus on what’s truly important to them, without worrying or feeling pressured by what others are doing. 62% of travelers surveyed said that Jomo travel helps them reduce stress and anxiety, as well as connect better with loved ones.

“You go there to relax with family and friends, away from the crowds and feel happy because you don’t have to worry about a lot of other things,” says Expedia’s Marshall.
