The World Trade Organization (WTO) has agreed to establish a panel to resolve a dispute between Indonesia and the European Union (EU) over tariffs imposed by the bloc on stainless steel products imported from Indonesia.
Earlier this year, Indonesia filed a lawsuit, claiming that the EU measures were inconsistent with international trade rules. Subsequent consultations aimed at resolving the dispute have failed to find common ground. Last month, Indonesia proposed that the Dispute Settlement Body establish a panel to rule on the case.
The EU initially rejected the request, but under WTO rules, a second request for a panel was automatically accepted. The panel will need several months of consideration and discussion before issuing a final ruling.
