The G7 Trade Ministers’ Meeting, taking place from 16 to 17 July 2024 in Calabria, is an important event chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy, Mr. Antonio Tajani. The meeting brings together Ministers from the G7 countries and many guest countries, promising to bring important decisions for the future of the global economy.

“In these two days, we will bring the G7 Ministers and invited countries to Villa San Giovanni and Reggio Calabria, countries that together account for 54% of the world’s GDP. Calabria and Southern Italy will become the economic capital of the world in the next two days,” Mr. Tajani stressed.

The conference will focus on four main themes: Strengthening the multilateral trading system through reform of the World Trade Organization (WTO), ensuring a level playing field in global markets, promoting environmental sustainability in trade, and improving economic resilience and security. These are priorities on the agenda of the Italian Presidency, reflecting a deep concern for a sustainable and equitable economic future.

In addition to the main topics, the sessions will be held at Villa San Giovanni and will focus on important regional issues such as the situation in the Middle East and the Red Sea, a strategic trade route for Italy, as well as the Indo-Pacific, a region important for global trade and supply chains.

In addition to the Ministers of the G7 countries, Ministers from important partner countries such as Brazil, Korea, India, New Zealand, Türkiye and Vietnam, along with the Director-General of the WTO and the Secretary-General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), will participate. This is an opportunity for countries to exchange and cooperate on global trade and economic issues.

The session begins with a meeting between G7 Trade Ministers and representatives of G7 Industry (B7), where business leaders will present to government representatives their vision and priorities for promoting competitiveness and fair, rules-based trade, strengthening the global economy and supply chains in the face of growing geopolitical uncertainty, and maximizing the benefits of artificial intelligence.

During the meeting, the G7 ministers will visit the port of Gioia Tauro, Italy’s leading port for cargo traffic. Here, the Italian humanitarian initiative “Food for Gaza” will be presented. In particular, a new scanner similar to the one that has been delivered to Cyprus – to strengthen and speed up security checks on containers carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza via the maritime humanitarian corridor centered on the island – will be presented.
