Vietnam currently has two centrally-governed cities, Thu Duc (Ho Chi Minh City) and Thuy Nguyen (Hai Phong). Thu Duc is the first city of its kind, established on the basis of merging the entire area and population of District 2, District 9, and Thu Duc District in early 2021.

Gia Nghia City was established on the basis of the entire 284km2 natural area and population of more than 85,000 people of Gia Nghia town. Gia Nghia City borders Dak Glong, Dak R'Lap, Dak Song districts and Lam Dong province.
