Because Japanese metro design standards do not take into account high lightning intensity like in Vietnam, the protection system will automatically cut off the power when lightning strikes or switch to manual start-up to ensure safety.
On the afternoon of February 13, Mr. Phan Cong Bang, Head of the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board, shared about metro line 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien) at a press conference providing socio-economic situation in the city.

Mr. Bang said that since its official operation until now (from December 22, 2024), the metro line has always received attention and positive response from the people. The number of passengers using the metro has increased, especially during the recent Lunar New Year, with some days reaching up to 120,000 passengers.
According to Mr. Bang, in the first days of operation, a number of incidents occurred, mainly related to the platform, leading to the train having to stop temporarily for 1-2 minutes for handling. In addition, the metro line also encountered problems that required the train to stop when it rained. Specifically, before the Lunar New Year 2025, metro train No. 1 had to stop temporarily at Ba Son and Tan Cang stations.
Regarding the reason for stopping the train in the rain, according to Mr. Bang, the first time was mainly because the staff was not used to operating in rainy weather conditions and had to stop to assess the situation. The second time, it was due to lightning affecting the power lines.

Mr. Bang further explained: The metro system of the contractor Hitachi (Japan), Japanese manufacturing standards, when brought to Vietnam, the lightning intensity was much higher, so when installing and evaluating, two solutions were given. One is that the protection system will automatically cut off the power for about 1 second, the other is to switch to manual operation to ensure safety. According to the contractor's recommendation, metro line 1 should be operated manually. Therefore, the first time this situation was encountered, there was a delay.
Currently, the operating unit (Urban Railway Company No. 1) has held a meeting to review experience and will have a faster solution in similar situations.
"During the heavy rain this morning (February 13), the metro line set up semi-automatic operation mode to ensure safety. It may be a few minutes late, but safety is paramount, we hope passengers will share," said Mr. Bang.

As for the ticket and platform systems, they are still in the process of being completed and are expected to be completed by May 2025 at the latest.
Adding to Mr. Bang's opinion, Mr. Tran Dang Thanh, Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Company No. 1, said that the unit will coordinate with contractor Hitachi to thoroughly overcome the remaining construction work of the project.
In particular, the company is adjusting parameters in the train schedule, limiting train speed on steep slopes in heavy rain to ensure safety.
For the automatic toll collection system, the company is actively coordinating with relevant units to implement cashless toll collection, applying bank cards, reading QR codes... In particular, upgrading the information system to increase processing speed.
Mr. Thanh added that in the near future, the unit will work with the investor to integrate and supplement ticket checking standards at some stations. When there are too many customers waiting to buy tickets, handheld ticket machines will be arranged. At the same time, the ticket checking system will develop more features, integrating the 24-card ticket system, banking, etc.
