Why do experts advise 'not to choose an easy major'?

Not only interested in majors in areas with key human resource needs in the locality and region, students in Da Lat City, Lam Dong Province are also wondering about choosing a course to meet human resource needs.

On the morning of March 22, nearly 3,000 students of Da Lat City were present at Da Lat University to attend the Exam Season Consulting program organized by Thanh Nien Newspaper in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Training and the Department of Education and Training of Lam Dong.

The program is broadcast live at thanhnien.vn , via Facebook fanpage, YouTube, TikTok of Thanh Nien Newspaper.

HOW HAS THE SUBJECT COMBINATION CHANGED?

Taking place right after the Ministry of Education and Training officially announced the admission regulations (Circular No. 6 amending and supplementing a number of articles in the university and college admission regulations for preschool education), the program received attention from students about this year's new points.

Dr. Tran Huu Duy, Head of Training Management Department of Dalat University, noted: "The Ministry's admission regulations clearly state that this year's admission subject combinations in the form of transcripts or high school graduation exam scores must include one of the two subjects math or literature with a weight of no less than 25%. If considering transcripts, students must use the results of the entire 12th grade year and the weight is also no less than 25%. The number of admission subject combinations for each major is unlimited."

In addition, Dr. Duy emphasized that the Ministry of Education and Training has officially stopped early admission, so universities do not accept applications and announce the list of qualified candidates before the high school exam as in previous years. "Students need to understand that this year there will only be one official admission round for all methods, then if schools lack quotas, they will consider supplementing," Dr. Duy shared.

KEY SECTORS OF THE METALLIC REGION AND THE CENTRAL HIGHLANDS

A 12C3 student from Lam Dong Province's Boarding Secondary and High School for Ethnic Minorities is interested in the future of nuclear engineering, while Nguyen Thu Trang, a student from Tran Phu High School, raised the issue of key human resource demand areas in Lam Dong Province and the Central Highlands region in the near future.

Dr. Tran Huu Duy said that in November 2024, the National Assembly approved the policy of restarting the project of 2 nuclear power plants in Ninh Thuan and it is expected to be operational in 2031. "In February 2025, the Prime Minister signed a decision approving the strategy for research and application of atomic energy, in which Dalat University is one of the 3 universities prioritized for investment and training of key human resources for this industry. Dalat University and Tay Nguyen University are also in the project to be upgraded to become 2 high-quality training centers, with important fields being pedagogy, tourism, high-tech agriculture and nuclear engineering. Therefore, studying majors related to these key fields will certainly open up job opportunities for students," said Dr. Duy.

Worried that businesses are recruiting new graduates but requiring experience and work skills, Nguyen Ngoc Thao Nguyen, a student at Tran Phu High School, wondered: "If I am accepted, will I have the opportunity to practice work related to my major when I enter my first year to gain work experience?"

Dr. Thai Kim Phung, Vice Principal of the School of Technology and Design, University of Economics, Ho Chi Minh City, said that the school equips students with many soft skills right from the first year. The school has team clubs and organizes business connection activities, so students have many opportunities to work in their field of study right from when they are students, thereby accumulating a lot of experience and practicing skills to meet the requirements of employers after graduation.

"LOOK FAR AND BROAD"

Faced with the reality that for many years now, candidates have shown little interest in technical majors because they think they find them difficult and tiring to study, Dr. Nguyen Trung Nhan, Head of Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, said that the current trend is that young people prefer to study simple and easy majors.

According to Dr. Nhan, you should not choose easy subjects, easy majors and consider them your strengths, while you can absolutely study more difficult subjects. For example, many students entering grade 10 choose to study social sciences because they are easy, but you can absolutely study STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). "Studying engineering and technology is a little more difficult, takes a little more time, but the results in terms of work and income are very worthy. Most of the world's famous CEOs come from the engineering and technology industry. If you have a good foundation in engineering and technology, you will have the opportunity to access many hot jobs in the world. When choosing a major, I hope you will look further, in addition to taking care of yourself and your family, you should have a vision for the general labor market of the whole country," Dr. Nhan expressed.

Dr. Nguyen Dinh Hung, lecturer of Construction Engineering and Management at Vietnam-Germany University, analyzed that many foreign investors in the fields of engineering and technology such as mechanics, electricity, electronics, and semiconductor microchips are coming to Vietnam to invest in production, so there are great job opportunities. Meanwhile, Master Tran Viet Dung, Head of Training Department of Cao Thang Technical College, said that the school's students have been recruited by businesses since their second year, but the school does not have enough resources to provide them.
