On the afternoon of April 5, a delegation from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training had a working session with representatives of investors, principals of the American International School Vietnam Primary, Secondary and High School (AISVN International School) and representatives of parents.

Will find financial resources for AISVN International School to operate long term

According to Ms. Ta Thi Minh Thu - Head of the Department of Management of Non-Public Educational Institutions of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, the meeting was to listen to the opinions of schools and parents because the department received a list of 28 parents who agreed to pay but were still concerned about the school's restructuring and whether there was an agency to monitor revenue and expenditure...

At the meeting, Mr. Ho Quang Trung - a member of the board of AISVN International School - said that the school's financial situation was facing many difficulties, and proposed many options to invite investors to cooperate in order to maintain the school's operations.

"The school has committed to the amount of support. For the amount that parents have paid, the school is planning to issue shares to parents. The school will find financial resources for the school to operate long-term and will have an official announcement to all parents," said Mr. Trung.

According to Ms. Chandra McGowan - the school's principal, up to now, the school has about 15 teachers who have left for various reasons. The school will review the teaching staff after the March 2024 salary payment period. For classes lacking teachers, the school will transfer students to the library and study on their own under the supervision of the librarian (only math is allowed). If the maintenance fee is sufficient, the school will still implement the program.

"It is very difficult to get money from parents"

Ms. Tran Phuong Anh - the parent representative supervising the school's activities - said: "My main responsibility is to monitor the cash flow, not to call for contributions. The school has lost the trust of parents because it has not provided a long-term direction for its operations. I feel that calling for contributions from parents is very difficult."

According to Ms. Anh, parents cannot pay (when the contract expires) because they cannot clearly see the direction of the school's operations.

Schools should notify parents of the use of bus services at least three days in advance. She suggested that schools should provide the IB curriculum plan and contingency plans to all parents.

The school must urgently make timesheets for the staff so that the monitoring team can implement them smoothly and in accordance with regulations. Parents really want a meeting between the Department of Education and Training, investors, school principals, and parents to regain the parents' trust.

Everything needs to be made public so that parents can know.

According to Ms. Le Thuy My Chau - Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, the department has recently come up with many plans and wishes from parents for their children to continue studying here.

The Department of Education and Training is monitoring the activities of schools and companies to ensure the rights of students, teachers and staff. Everything needs to be made public so that parents can understand, the professional department continues to grasp and monitor, record to promptly report and propose solutions. Cases of exemption and reduction must be clearly calculated.

"Investors and schools need to have a thank you letter, sent in a way that shows the respect of investors and the school board for the parents' gesture because the school has made many promises in the past," Ms. Chau suggested.

Ms. Chau also reiterated that she had asked investors to have a specific plan for restructuring the school before May 15.

At the same time, Ms. Chau affirmed that the Department of Education and Training did not direct the delay in paying salaries to Vietnamese employees and workers. This responsibility belongs to the school. The school must take action to encourage and reassure these workers.
