On the morning of May 11, Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine held a ceremony to celebrate its 15th anniversary and 34 years of building and developing the school from the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Training and Development of Health Staff.
Attending the program were former President Truong Tan Sang, former Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan, and Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Duong Anh Duc.

Speaking at the ceremony, Associate Professor, Doctor, Doctor Nguyen Thanh Hiep, Principal of Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine, said that after 15 years of establishment and 34 years of construction and development, the school has now deployed training in 10 university training majors, 23 level I specialized majors, 18 level II specialized majors, 10 resident physician majors, 11 master's majors; 4 doctoral majors. The school has provided more than 7,500 full-time general practitioners, more than 2,500 general practitioners in the joint training program, more than 11,000 nurses and midwives and more than 3,000 postgraduate graduates to participate in the city's health system or grassroots health care.
According to Mr. Hiep, the school currently has 8 faculties, training more than 15,000 students and postgraduates. "The school's goal is to change its name again in 15-20 years to affirm the school's stature, becoming a health sciences university with complete training programs in the health sciences sector. This is a commitment and also a great motivation for the school's collective," said the Principal of Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine.

At the ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, Mr. Duong Anh Duc, acknowledged and highly appreciated the achievements of Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine in recent times. Over the years, the school has always been committed to fulfilling its mission well. It is a unit that always cares about both training specialized medical personnel and training for grassroots health care. During the recent Covid-19 pandemic, when Ho Chi Minh City faced difficulties, the collective of teachers and students of the school actively, made efforts, and proactively participated in overcoming the pandemic. That shows that the staff, lecturers and students of the school always adhere to their mission to continue to develop continuously.
The Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee hopes that the school will maintain and continue to affirm itself as one of the high-quality training centers for health sciences not only in the city but also in the whole country.
Mr. Duc emphasized: "Among the achievements, the school has its own unique point, which is the Vietnam-Germany Medical Faculty. Students of this faculty graduate not only receiving a Vietnamese university degree but also a European practice certificate."

From there, Mr. Duc hopes that the school will continue to promote its full capacity and potential, contributing to the cause of training high-quality human resources for the city, the southern region and the whole country. At the same time, the school will contribute more actively to the cause of taking care of people's health, contributing to building Ho Chi Minh City into a leading center for care, protection, treatment and health in the region.
The Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee said that the city's leaders will always accompany and make appropriate investments for the school to develop and affirm its role and position in the national education system.
Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine is a public university established by the Prime Minister. The school is under the direct management of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, the professional management of the Ministry of Education and Training and the professional management of the Ministry of Health. The school was established in 2008 on the basis of the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Training and Development of Health Staff.
In February this year, the Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine, Campus 2, combined with a practice hospital with a total investment of more than VND2,400 billion, was started in Tan Kien Commune, Binh Chanh District (HCMC). The project is expected to be completed in 2025.
