According to DW, speaking to the press, Prime Minister Soder assessed that this was most likely a terrorist attack as current information supports this assessment. The identity of the suspect in the incident was identified as a 24-year-old Afghan citizen.
All other details remain under investigation and the authorities will clarify the incident.
Earlier, at around 10:30 a.m. on February 13 local time (4:30 p.m. on the same day Vietnam time), a car suddenly crashed into the back of a group of service industry workers participating in a protest related to a strike organized by the Verdi union in a square near the center of Munich.
Verdi is one of Germany's largest unions, representing hundreds of thousands of workers in the public service.
At the scene was a badly damaged Mini car, along with debris and shoes of the injured. At least 28 people were injured, including children, some of them seriously.
Police arrested the suspect at the scene. State radio station BR quoted a witness as saying the driver deliberately drove into the group of protesters.
The incident took place right before the Munich Security Conference - an important event that opened on February 14 and lasted for 3 days, bringing together the world's top officials in diplomacy and defense to discuss hot global issues.
The crash site is about a mile from the conference venue. A large-scale security operation has been launched near Munich's central train station following the incident. Security in the Bavarian capital is expected to be further tightened in the coming days following the incident.
