VPF announced that the match between Hanoi FC and Hai Phong will have VAR. This match will take place at 7:15 p.m. on August 2 at Hang Day Stadium, in round 4 of phase 2 of V-League 2023.
This is the second match of VAR in V-League 2023. Previously, VAR appeared in the match between Viettel and Hong Linh Ha Tinh also at Hang Day Stadium. This match lasted more than 100 minutes because the referee spent a lot of time consulting VAR.
In the match on July 27, VAR assisted referee Ngo Duy Lan three times. The first situation with VAR's participation was Paulo Pinto's foul on Nguyen Duc Chien in the first half. After listening to advice from the video assistants, the referee decided not to issue a red card.
VAR first appeared in the match between Viettel and Hong Linh Ha Tinh.
The second phase was a goal by Nguyen Hoang Duc. It took VAR nearly 5 minutes to conclude that the Viettel player was not offside when scoring.
Besides listening to advice from the VAR room, Mr. Ngo Duy Lan also reviewed the slow-motion tape himself once to determine the error of Ha Tinh Club that led to the penalty at the end of the match.
VAR has not been applied to all matches in the V-League due to limited human resources and number of VAR vehicles. FIFA also recommended that VPF should apply VAR in matches that are not stressful and do not affect the championship race. The reason is that referees need time to get used to VAR in the beginning.
In the matches that have not applied VAR in round 3 of phase 2 of V-League 2023, some coaches have commented on the refereeing work. In particular, coach Vu Hong Viet Viet (Nam Dinh) and coach Flavio Cruz (Hanoi Police Club) said that if VAR was used, their teams would receive more favorable decisions.
