Every year on January 12, Lai Yen village (Hoai Duc district, Hanoi) holds a duck catching contest in the pond, attracting many locals and tourists to watch and cheer.
The duck catching game was held at 2:00 p.m. on February 9 (January 12), at Lai Yen village pond (Lai Yen commune, Hoai Duc district, Hanoi).
According to Dan Viet reporters, it was about 14 degrees Celsius outside, and many spectators were present early, surrounding the village pond to cheer for the athletes.
According to the announcement of the Organizing Committee, this year there are 21 participating teams and each team will have about 15 minutes to swim and catch ducks. Each duck catching team will consist of 3 people. The young people must be really skillful to be able to herd and catch ducks in the large lake.
According to the concept of Lai Yen villagers, the duck catching contest is to pray for good irrigation, good crops, and healthy and talented children.
According to the villagers’ experience, the easiest way to catch a duck is to swim slowly, corner it, and then the whole team rushes to catch it. However, this year’s ducks are considered extremely agile and difficult to catch compared to previous years.
The underwater duck catching was extremely thrilling as the ducks continuously flew and dived underwater, making it difficult for the teams. Some teams even touched the ducks but could not catch them.
A duck that was not caught by the athletes flew to another pond, forcing the organizers to release a new duck. At this time, the village's sponsors will award prizes of 100,000 VND or more. The more difficult the catch, the higher the prize will be based on a cumulative calculation.
Because there were so many spectators and no more standing space, some people had to climb tall trees to watch and cheer.
In particular, every time a situation appeared where it seemed like the duck was in the hands of the athletes but suddenly it flapped its wings and flew away, the atmosphere at Lai Yen village pond became extremely lively and bustling.
The athletes expressed regret when the whole group had just missed and ran out of time to catch the duck.
Mr. Muoi (from Lai Yen village) tightly holds the duck he just caught and his team was awarded 5 million VND by the organizers.
Notably, the team of 3 brothers Tu, Khoi, and Duc won the prize of 12 million VND right from the first round. Mr. Tu (group representative) shared: "I was extremely happy to catch the duck with the prize of 12 million VND right from the opening of the competition. Although it was cold, our team tried hard and it only took 5 minutes to catch this duck".
