In Uong Bi, religious tourism, seasonal tourism, and local tourism are gradually decreasing, replaced by festival tourism, experiences, and exploration activities.
Tourism boom at the beginning of the year
The opening ceremony of Yen Tu Spring Festival 2025 did not take place on the weekend, but attracted more than 150,000 attendees, a large number compared to many years ago. This was due to the effective organization of the festival, innovation in communication work, promotion of Yen Tu's image, and the richness of the opening activities, which created a highlight for the relic, contributing to attracting tourists.
Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh, Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee, said: After many years, this year Uong Bi recreated the magnificent palanquin procession with 11 palanquin teams from various localities along with the Buddhist Sangha of Quang Ninh province. The bell-ringing ceremony to open the Yen Tu Spring Festival, the incense offering ceremony to pray for national peace and prosperity, the Yen Tu sacred seal ceremony... were organized simply but solemnly, ensuring solemnity and carrying profound educational meaning.
Ms. Nguyen Thao Huong, a tourist from Hanoi, said: The beautiful landscape, gentle people, and civilized behavior are big pluses of Yen Tu. We were quite excited about going to the pagoda and worshiping Buddha because of the festival activities here. My children enjoyed the experience of wrapping banh chung, weaving baskets, embroidering brocade, asking for words, making to he figurines, writing calligraphy, pushing sticks, tug of war, making clay firecrackers, playing chess, etc.
Mr. Le Tien Dung, Head of the Management Board of Yen Tu National Monument and Forest, said: Unlike before, the opening ceremony of Yen Tu festival was often congested. This year, we welcomed group guests from New Year's Eve, the number of guests arriving on the following days was evenly distributed between 5,000-10,000 people. This prevented Yen Tu from being overloaded, visitors had space to enjoy and experience, we welcomed and served visitors better. Since the beginning of the festival, Yen Tu has not had any incidents of public order and safety, environmental sanitation, health care, and religious practices have all been well implemented.
The city's functional forces have enhanced the embellishment and decoration of Uong Bi's relic sites and landscapes, encouraged the construction of more tourism products and services; managed activities at tourist sites, accommodation establishments, restaurants, and shopping areas. The city currently has 97 accommodation establishments and 5 restaurants that meet standards for serving tourists. The work of ensuring environmental sanitation, relic landscapes, and food safety and hygiene at festivals has been effectively implemented. The relic sites have adequate public trash cans, signs, etc.; waste is treated and collected during the day. Management, financial revenue and expenditure, donations, and sponsorship for festival activities have been effectively implemented, with account numbers, opened tracking books, and revenue and expenditure vouchers in accordance with regulations.
From the beginning of 2025 to now, the city has welcomed over 1 million visitors (15,000 international visitors), an increase of 111% over the same period in 2024, of which Yen Tu welcomed 250,000 visitors; tourism revenue reached nearly 700 billion VND, an increase of 145% over the same period in 2024.
Attracting investment for development in the right direction
Uong Bi received a lot of exciting information about major tourism projects being renewed or restarted in the area. Mr. Pham Xuan Thanh, Head of the City's Department of Culture and Information, said: The city has coordinated with Vang Danh Coal Joint Stock Company and Uong Bi Thermal Power Company to re-survey some tunnels and production locations to come up with ideas for forming an electricity and coal tourism tour. The city assigned the People's Committee of Phuong Dong ward and the city's functional departments to strengthen planning management, review land and assets on land for the 36-hole golf course project at the Yen Trung Lake provincial tourist area. The city has implemented many more steps in the strategy to attract investment for proper development at the Phuong Hoang mountain scenic spot; continue to consolidate documents to accelerate the progress of recognizing a number of eco-tourism sites, first of all the Khe Song - Thac Bac tourist site in Thuong Yen Cong commune...
Mr. Duong Thanh Hung, Chief of Office of Vang Danh Coal Joint Stock Company, said: The advantage is that the tunnels planned for research are tunnel doors +122 and +135, which are the first two tunnel doors of the Company put into operation since its establishment in 1964. Up to now, a part of the tunnel doors are still in normal use.
Regarding the 36-hole golf course project at Yen Trung Lake, Mr. Phan Minh Tam, Chairman of Phuong Dong Ward People's Committee, shared: According to the design proposed by the investor, this is a modern golf course project, covering about half of the area of Yen Trung Lake, creating a great highlight for the overall high-quality tourism of the city. Uong Bi has a fairly methodical planning and land management roadmap in this location, so if the investor is strong enough, the project will be implemented very quickly.
The city continues to survey and develop ideas for tourism products in the core of Yen Tu forest. In the immediate future, there are Hoa hermitage, Duoc hermitage, Ngu Doi waterfall, pine garden, etc. Mr. Le Tien Dung, Head of the Management Board of Yen Tu National Monuments and Forests, said: Yen Tu's forest capital is very rich, the landscape is completely natural and pristine. The research sites in the core of the forest are convenient for travel and close to the relic sites being exploited, inside these locations also hide interesting real imprints associated with the Buddhist King Tran Nhan Tong and the Zen sect he created...
Uong Bi tourism is having a positive movement, not only exploiting the existing potential, but also forming new potential tourism resources, creating the premise for the city's tourism to break through.
