On the morning of July 18, speaking to the press about the results of the 2024 high school graduation exam, Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, said that this year, Ho Chi Minh City has 84,046 candidates taking the high school graduation exam. The graduation rate of students is 99.68%.
High school graduation exam students have "focus"
Tuoi Tre Online reporter asked about the fact that Ho Chi Minh City is always at the forefront of the country in innovating teaching methods and testing and evaluating students, but the high school graduation exam results are not high, ranking 20th out of 63 provinces and cities.
Regarding this, Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu said: "It is obvious that Ho Chi Minh City only ranks 20th in terms of high school graduation exam results. Because Ho Chi Minh City has long innovated teaching methods, testing and evaluating students in the direction of developing students' qualities and abilities.
Meanwhile, the high school graduation exam is based on the old curriculum and is for students nationwide. Not only this year, but for many years, Ho Chi Minh City has not been the locality with the highest graduation exam results in the country. However, Ho Chi Minh City is still steadfast in its innovation as mentioned above."
Besides, there is another reason, which is that students in Ho Chi Minh City have a focused graduation exam. That is, they focus on the subjects that they will use to apply for university admission. If calculated by university admission block, the scores of students in Ho Chi Minh City are very high.
Specifically, there are 4 top groups in the country: Group A (math - physics - chemistry), Group A1 (math - physics - foreign language), Group B (math - chemistry - biology), Group C (literature - history - geography). In Group D (math - literature - foreign language), students in Ho Chi Minh City ranked 8th in the country.
However, according to the high school graduation exam regulations, students must take the exam according to the combination. For example, candidates use block B to apply for university but they must take the full combination of natural sciences: physics - chemistry - biology.
For these candidates, they only focus on getting high scores in chemistry and biology, and only take physics to pass the high school graduation exam. This also explains why, when calculating the scores by combination, Ho Chi Minh City is not ranked high, such as the combination of natural sciences ranked 43rd, and social sciences ranked 11th.
Ho Chi Minh City ranked 3rd in math graduation exam scores
High school graduation exam results show that Ho Chi Minh City has the highest rate of students achieving average English scores in the country.
This is the 8th year the city has maintained its leading position in the high school graduation exam in English. In addition, the percentage of students achieving the third average score in the country in math (6.99 points).
According to Mr. Hieu: "The Ho Chi Minh City High School Graduation Examination Council has fully implemented the process and solutions to ensure the rights of all candidates, including candidates who encountered problems during the exam. Typically, candidates encountered problems at the exam site of Nguyen Du High School, District 10 (the exam supervisor mistakenly signed in the box of the exam examiner, when discovered, the candidate was required to do the test on a new exam paper).
After completing the grading of the high school graduation exams, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training reviewed the candidates' papers in the exam room where the incident occurred, ensuring their rights," Mr. Hieu affirmed.
