On the afternoon of January 11, the special plane of Indonesian President Joko Widodo arrived at Noi Bai airport, starting a state visit to Vietnam at the invitation of President Vo Van Thuong.

Welcoming Indonesian President Joko Widodo and his delegation at Noi Bai airport were Head of the Office of the President Le Khanh Hai, Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Tran Sy Thanh, and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ha Kim Ngoc.
Also present were Vietnamese Ambassador to Indonesia Ta Van Thong and a number of officials from units of the Office of the President and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Indonesian Ambassador to Vietnam Denny Abdi and a number of officials from the Indonesian Embassy in Vietnam also welcomed the delegation.
The high-level Indonesian delegation included Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, State-owned Enterprises Minister Erick Thohir, Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, and Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono.
Also present were Chief of Staff to the Presidential Office Moeldoko, member of the Presidential Advisory Council, Ambassador Gandi Sulistiyanto Soeherman and Indonesian Ambassador to Vietnam Denny Abdi.
During the visit, tomorrow, January 12, Indonesian President Joko Widodo will attend a state-level welcoming ceremony hosted by President Vo Van Thuong. The two leaders will then hold talks, witness the signing ceremony and exchange a number of cooperation documents before meeting the press.
The Indonesian leader is also expected to meet with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue.
During his three-day stay in Vietnam, Mr. Joko Widodo will also have a number of other activities with Vietnamese leaders, such as attending a martial arts performance with President Vo Van Thuong and meeting with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh with a number of typical Vietnamese and Indonesian businesses.

This is President Joko Widodo's second state visit to Vietnam (the first visit was in 2018).
The visit took place in the context of many advances in Vietnam - Indonesia relations.
At the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the afternoon of January 11, spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said that Vietnam is Indonesia's only strategic partner in ASEAN.
In terms of trade, Indonesia is currently Vietnam's third largest trading partner in ASEAN, while Vietnam is Indonesia's fourth largest trading partner in ASEAN.
Ms. Hang affirmed that President Widodo's visit is proof that Vietnam is consistent in valuing relations with neighboring countries, including ASEAN.
Speaking about the bilateral relationship with the Vietnamese press before the visit, Indonesian Ambassador to Vietnam Denny Abdi expressed hope that the two countries "can soon upgrade to a comprehensive strategic partnership".
According to him, this step will demonstrate the two countries' strong commitment to more effective cooperation and open up new opportunities.
Indonesia has 119 projects in Vietnam.
By the end of November 2023, Vietnam - Indonesia trade turnover reached about 12.6 billion USD. The two countries aim to reach a turnover of 15 billion USD in a more balanced direction. Regarding investment, as of September 2023, Indonesia has 119 projects worth more than 646 million USD, focusing on the fields of processing, manufacturing, accommodation and catering services. Vietnam has 17 investment projects in Indonesia with a total registered capital of 59 million USD, focusing on the fields of trade, information technology, agriculture and industry. Indonesia is one of the countries in the region that has the earliest security and defense relations with us, establishing a military attaché office in 1964. The two countries regularly exchange defense and security delegations and sign a number of bilateral defense cooperation agreements, actively participating in activities within the ASEAN framework.
