General Secretary and President To Lam meets US President Joe Biden

The General Secretary and President affirmed that the Vietnam-US relationship has many very special features, from former enemies to partners, comprehensive partners and now reaching the highest level - Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

According to the special correspondent of VNA, within the framework of attending the Future Summit, the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, working in the United States, on September 25, General Secretary and President To Lam had a meeting with US President Joe Biden.

At the meeting, General Secretary and President To Lam expressed his sincere thanks to President Biden for his message of deep condolences on the passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, and thanked the US Government for its timely support for the Vietnamese people during the recent Typhoon Yagi.

General Secretary and President To Lam sincerely thanked President Biden for his sentiments and great contributions to Vietnam and the Vietnam-US relationship; he said that the historic visit to the United States in 2015 by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and President Biden's visit to Vietnam in September 2023 created important momentum to bring the bilateral relationship to a new level, reaching the highest level of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership as it is today, opening up space for the bilateral relationship to develop strongly and stably in the coming decades.

The General Secretary and President agreed that Vietnam and the United States share a common vision of building a better future for all humanity from this lesson, which is to promote the role of the spirit of healing, respect and mutual understanding, in which respect for each other's independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and political institutions is the most important.

The General Secretary and President affirmed that the Vietnam-US relationship has many very special features. Over the past 50 years, from former enemies to partners, comprehensive partners and now reaching the highest level of relations - Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The relationship between the two countries is entering a new historical page and is truly a model in international relations of efforts to heal and build relations after the war.

President Joe Biden sent condolences to Vietnam for the damage caused by super typhoon Yagi and affirmed that the US Government is ready to support Vietnam in the recovery process after the storm.

Once again congratulating General Secretary and President To Lam on his new position, President Biden affirmed that the United States considers Vietnam a partner of top importance in the region.

President Biden recalled his state visit to Vietnam in September 2023 with many good memories of the warm and respectful welcome of the Vietnamese leaders and people, especially the historic event when President Biden and General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong jointly announced the upgrading of Vietnam-US relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership for peace, cooperation and sustainable development in the region and the world.

President Biden affirmed that the United States supports a “strong, independent, self-reliant, and prosperous” Vietnam and will continue to promote the partnership between the two countries on the basis of respect for each other’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political institutions, so that the US-Vietnam relationship continues to be a model for healing and cooperation to build the future.

General Secretary and President To Lam emphasized that Vietnam is standing at a new historical starting point, a new era - the era of the Vietnamese nation's rise, and Vietnam will continue to firmly implement its foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralization, diversification, being a friend, a reliable partner, an active and responsible member of the international community, in which the United States is considered a partner of strategic importance, and expressed confidence that the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership will continue to maintain a stable and long-term development momentum for the interests and aspirations of the people of the two countries.

The two leaders expressed their delight at the positive results achieved after one year of implementing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, in line with the wishes and interests of both sides, contributing to maintaining peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.

To continue to maintain the stable and effective development momentum of the new relationship framework and towards the 30th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-US diplomatic relations in 2025, the two leaders agreed that the two sides need to continue to closely coordinate to effectively implement the Vietnam-US Joint Statement in 2023, including increasing contacts and exchanges at all levels, especially at the high level, focusing on promoting economic - trade - investment cooperation, high technology, semiconductor cooperation, further promoting the potential for cooperation in the field of training high-quality human resources, considering this to continue to be the focus and a breakthrough in the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Regarding international and regional issues of mutual concern, the two leaders agreed that the two sides should continue to strengthen cooperation at regional and international forums, including ASEAN, the Mekong-US Partnership, APEC, the United Nations, etc., contributing to promoting dialogue, peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.

President Biden affirmed that the United States is committed to promoting peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region, attaching importance to the central role of ASEAN; supporting Vietnam to play an increasingly important role in the region and the world; sharing the desire to closely coordinate with Vietnam in maintaining peace, stability, cooperation, upholding international law, ensuring freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea, combating climate change and resolving common regional and international issues./.
