Italy's Il Foglio newspaper has just launched the first newspaper publication made entirely by artificial intelligence (AI), from writing articles, creating headlines to choosing quotes.
Il Foglio claims to be the first newspaper in the world to publish an entirely AI -generated edition. According to editor Claudio Cerasa, it is part of a month-long experiment to assess the impact of AI on journalism and work life.
The four-page publication, titled Il Foglio AI, was officially released on newsstands and online platforms on March 18. According to Cerasa, AI takes care of the entire process, from writing the article, creating the headline, choosing quotes to summarizing the content, while the journalist's role is limited to asking questions to the AI and reading back the answers.
Newsrooms around the world are looking to apply AI to their journalism. In early March, The Guardian reported that BBC News had begun using AI to personalize content for readers.
Il Foglio AI's front page includes articles about US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Italian economic situation, citing data from the national statistics agency.
Page two deals with the “ambiguous” trend of romance among European youth. However, according to The Guardian, none of the articles quotes real people, although the articles are clearly structured, coherent and free of grammatical errors.
The final page is a reader letter—also written by an AI—that asks whether AI could render humans useless. The AI replies, “This is a great invention, but I still don’t know how to order coffee without sugar.”
According to Cerasa, Il Foglio AI is not just a journalistic product but also an experiment, aiming to reflect how AI works in practice and its impact on the daily news production process.
