On the evening of March 25, China lost 0-2 to Australia in the 8th match of Group C, stage 3 of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Asia. China has lost all hope of officially winning a ticket to the World Cup.
This humiliating defeat has left China with no hope of qualifying for the World Cup from the third round. They can only hope to reach the top four to qualify for the fourth round. But their chances are not high because Indonesia is currently in fourth place with three points more than China.
China even conceded two goals in the first 30 minutes of the match. In the rest of the match, Australia took the initiative to slow down the pace, giving the game to the home team. But China still did not create any significant opportunities.
However, coach Ivankovic still appeared confident when he said: "I am completely confident. This season's Chinese Championship has only started 2 rounds so many of our players have not yet caught up with the game."

"It's important that they get back to their best form for the club. I think that will decide whether we can get into the top four or not," coach Ivankovic added.
The Croatian strategist also said he was satisfied with the current rejuvenation of the Chinese team.
"Over the past year, we have brought 15 new players into the national team. This is a different national team, younger. I am still satisfied with the team today despite the not-so-good results," said Mr. Ivankovic.
Representing the rejuvenation of the Chinese team is 18-year-old midfielder Wang Yudong. He made his national team debut as a substitute in the 66th minute, and left quite an impression afterwards.
"It's a pity we didn't score, but the young players brought a positive atmosphere. This is part of football," coach Ivankovic concluded.
