Library of Congress Honors Compassionate Bookshelf and Wisdom House Program

According to VNA correspondent in Washington, on October 18, at the headquarters of the US Library of Congress, Washington DC, the annual award ceremony entitled Literacy Eradication and Knowledge Dissemination took place.

The Literacy - Knowledge Dissemination Award has been organized by the US Library of Congress since 2013, to honor organizations with innovative, creative and effective strategies in promoting reading and creating lifelong learning opportunities for everyone. After 10 years, the US Library of Congress has awarded the award to 180 organizations from 39 countries around the world. This year, Vietnam has a representative, the Compassionate Bookcase Program and the Wisdom House, honored to be named in the Outstanding Practice category of this prestigious award, for their efforts in creating a reading and lifelong learning ecosystem, contributing to creating generations of global citizens with full intelligence and compassion. This year's award was presented to 18 organizations from 7 countries including: the US (accounting for 2/3 of the awards), New Zealand, India, the UK, Indonesia, Pakistan and Vietnam. Speaking at the award ceremony, Dr. Carla Hayden - Director of the US Library of Congress emphasized: "Literacy is the path to happiness, health and comprehensive development of each individual. Today, the US Library of Congress respectfully recognizes and honors 18 organizations that have made great contributions and strong commitments to improving literacy and disseminating knowledge globally."

The US Library of Congress Award is an international recognition of the Compassionate Bookshelf and Wisdom House Program. Up to now, this Vietnamese program has built a network of 20,090 bookshelf (more than 1.1 million books) in more than 3,000 schools and communities, 168 community learning spaces in 6 countries (Vietnam, Malaysia, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, USA), bringing completely free lifelong learning opportunities to millions of children and adults. Sharing about the founding group's contributions to the reading community in Vietnam as well as around the world, Ms. Nguyen Thuy Hong, Deputy Ambassador of Vietnam to the US affirmed: "The award is a recognition of the group's great contributions to the activities of promoting reading, promoting learning and improving the intellectual level of Vietnamese people. Hopefully, the success of this award will spread and encourage the reading movement in the community with the participation and contributions of organizations and individuals both at home and abroad. The Vietnamese Embassy in the US will actively and proactively connect to promote cooperation between the Nhan Ai Bookcase and the House of Wisdom as well as Vietnamese reading promotion organizations with the reading community in the US and Vietnam, contributing to enhancing cultural-educational and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries, making practical and effective contributions to the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. "Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, founder of the Nhan Ai Bookcase and the House of Wisdom, shared: "This award is for all philanthropists, organizations, individuals, teachers, volunteers with tens of thousands of people from many countries who have accompanied and supported, joined hands to make the program. The international recognition and honor by a prestigious and prestigious cultural and educational organization in the world also further affirms the vision, mission of the organization and the value of the program that we have been diligently pursuing for many years.

The Humanitarian Bookcase Program has created opportunities to access libraries and read quality books for more than 2.2 million readers in 60/63 provinces and cities in Vietnam and one province in Laos, contributing to the transformation and rearrangement of the library/bookcase system to ensure the most convenient service for people and children in difficult areas. The "Houses" have brought many diverse and useful activities to the community including: libraries; free classes both in person and online on many subjects necessary for life (especially English, learning methods and life skills, personal finance); scholarships for members who make efforts in activities; cultural and educational exchange talks with leading professors, scholars, lecturers, and volunteer experts in the country and the world; activities of sports, art, and martial arts clubs; local cultural "museums"; STEM education; experiential summer camps, etc. All have created completely free communities of reading and lifelong learning, bringing opportunities to access quality and equal education to millions of children and people. In the afternoon of the same day, activities of displaying, introducing, sharing, connecting... took place between this year's award-winning organizations. These activities will open up many opportunities for cooperation between organizations that share the same mission with each other and with the US Library of Congress, to promote equal educational opportunities for everyone, for the development of the community, the country and humanity.
