Nguyen Hoang Duong, class leader of International Business class 62B, Institute of International Trade and Economics, National Economics University, impressed with his "huge" achievement with an average score of 4.0/4.0 (9.59 on a 10-point scale). Notably, Hoang Duong only took 6 semesters (including the internship) to complete this program, 1 year earlier than his classmates.
This was also the goal Duong set out right from the moment he entered the school. “On the first day of attending the opening ceremony of my student life, seeing a representative of the new students stand up to speak, I also hope that in the future I will be able to stand on the podium, with my loved ones below. I think there is nothing more meaningful than becoming the valedictorian of the whole school,” said Hoang Duong.
Always having plans and goals for everything, so during his school years, Hoang Duong continuously achieved outstanding results.
During his primary and secondary school years, Hoang Duong was always the top student in Phu Binh district (Thai Nguyen) and was honored as an outstanding student of the province. With both parents being high school teachers, Duong feels lucky because both of them always give him advice or guidance when needed.
In high school, Duong decided to go to Hanoi to study at Nguyen Tat Thanh Secondary and High School. Like a fish in water, this school helped him develop his strengths to the fullest.
Duong was elected as Deputy Secretary of the Youth Union of Nguyen Tat Thanh Secondary and High School in grade 11, directly in charge of many school activities such as supporting student exchanges with schools in Japan, Singapore, Africa or participating in charity projects to donate to build schools in Ha Giang... The male student also continuously ranked first in the entire grade throughout 3 years of high school, based on the total score.
Being an active person and loving Union activities, even though he was admitted early to Hanoi University of Science and Technology through the talent selection method (as a contestant in the Road to Olympia contest), but feeling that "if he works in the technical field in the future, it will not be suitable", Duong still decided to transfer to study at the National Economics University.
Keeping the same principles as when he was in high school, from the very first days of entering school, Hoang Duong divided his time according to the formula: 30% for studying and scientific research, 30% for extracurricular activities, 30% for work and 10% for entertainment.
“I am usually quite serious about studying. Before learning new knowledge, I will preview the content I am about to learn. I also actively speak up in class. If I don’t understand something, I will ask the lecturer right away. These things sound simple, but in reality, it is not easy to follow and seriously implement. In addition, focusing on the lecture right in class also makes reviewing for exams easier,” Hoang Duong shared.
Thinking quickly and logically is also an advantage that helps Duong not spend too much time studying books and theories. Therefore, in the remaining time, Duong often learns and expands his knowledge of the field through documents and books.
“International Business is inherently about practical management, so it is necessary to know how to handle specific situations. When studying a problem or subject, I often look for information about it.”
Reading newspapers is also a habit that Hoang Duong has maintained since grade 6. The male student believes that social knowledge and understanding of social changes, no matter what profession you work in, are always important. Studying is also the motivation that helps Duong want to learn about everything around him.
Thanks to his well-planned and quick learning, Hoang Duong completed the program in just 3 years. The male student also achieved a total score of 4.0/4.0, including 41/44 A+ subjects; the remaining 3 subjects were A. Duong achieved full scores in most political theory subjects such as: Marxist-Leninist Philosophy, Marxist-Leninist Political Economy, Scientific Socialism, Ho Chi Minh Thought, History of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
In addition to studying, Hoang Duong also spent time participating in scientific research since his first year. Duong also has a number of international publications related to the fields of International Supply Chain Management, Competitiveness, International Finance, Corporate Finance, etc.
During his 3 years studying at the National Economics University, the thing that makes Duong most proud is the title of Outstanding Student at the school level he received in his 3rd year. Every year, the school will select 10 out of 25,000 students to honor.
To receive this title, candidates must go through 3 rounds of consideration including the grassroots level, the school union level and the school council/Board of Directors/Party Committee level. Students' achievements are considered on 3 aspects including study and scientific research; extracurricular activities; and individual awards.
As the head of the Student Style Club under the School Youth Union, he won second prize in the Marxist-Leninist Olympic competition and several student awards, and achieved excellent academic achievements… Hoang Duong became the youngest person to receive this title that year.
“This is a mark that makes me happy and proud of the efforts I have made over the past time,” Duong said.
Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thuong Lang, Senior Lecturer at the Institute of International Trade and Economics, assessed Nguyen Hoang Duong as a "rare" case at the National Economics University.
“The first days I met Duong, I saw that he was quick and bright, so I suggested that he should participate in scientific research. At first it was by chance, but after 4-5 months of guidance, Duong researched and improved himself.
Duong is passionate, hard-working, persistent, knows how to research an article from an economic and business perspective, can use information processing software effectively and knows how to work in a team. The amount of scientific research Duong completed during his university years is very rare for a student," Associate Professor Lang said.
Having completed the program 1 year early, Duong did not have a “break” but focused on working immediately. Currently, Duong is in charge of the International Business field in an energy company. Duong wishes to continue studying in the next 2-3 years and become a manager in the International Business field.
