On June 12, a clip recording a drowning rescue incident went viral on social media, with the caption “Another case in Tam Nong, Dong Thap. Went swimming in the river 7, came back with 3, and 4 are missing” which attracted special attention from the public. Many people were confused when watching this information. The clip attracted hundreds of comments and shares despite being posted not long ago.
Vice Chairman of Tam Nong District People's Committee Chau Van Bo affirmed that the content of the posted clip is not true. There is no story of 4 people missing while bathing in the river in Tam Nong district. The image in the clip is of a "fatal accident due to drowning" that occurred on May 18, 2023, causing one death.
Misinformation is spreading on TikTok. Screenshot
Specifically, at around 3:40 p.m. on May 18, 2023, LPQA (born in 2005, residing in Phu Thanh A commune, Tam Nong district) and a group of friends were swimming in the river at the Kenh Duong Gao 1 bridge area (in Tram Chim town, Tam Nong district). The group jumped off the bridge together, and while jumping from the bridge railing into the canal, LPQA did not resurface after hitting the water. After that, the group of friends dived to search but did not find him, so they called for help from local people and the police.
After receiving the report, Tram Chim Town Police mobilized forces to protect the scene and organize a search and rescue for the victim. At 5:50 p.m. on May 18, 2023, the victim's body was found. Through verification, it was determined that when LPQA jumped from a high place, he was overwhelmed by water, fainted, and sank, leading to drowning and death.
The leader of Tam Nong District Police said that the unit has grasped the case of posting false information, causing public confusion as mentioned above; at the same time, it will coordinate with related forces to track down the account owner who posted this clip, consolidate the case file, and handle it according to the provisions of the law.
