On the sidelines of the conference summarizing the 2023-2024 school year held this morning, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Hoang Minh Son explained the reason why the admission scores based on the high school graduation exam results of many universities this year increased.

Deputy Minister Hoang Minh Son said that information about industries and schools is increasingly transparent and clear. Therefore, schools with good training quality and high human resource demand will attract many candidates.

"Some industries have low quotas, but if they are concentrated in large areas, the standard scores can still be pushed up. In addition, this also depends on ensuring fairness between admission methods," the Deputy Minister analyzed.

If the admission methods ensure fairness and the exam questions are clearly differentiated, there is nothing unusual about high admission scores. However, if fairness is not guaranteed and candidates can enter through some method more easily, the Ministry needs to analyze more carefully.

Regarding the fact that many candidates scored 9.5 points per subject but were not admitted to many majors in group C, Deputy Minister Son said that the Ministry of Education and Training had also made assessments and predictions from the beginning when comparing the score distribution of the past 2 years and saw an increase. With prestigious and quality schools, the competition is even more obvious.

"The increase in admission scores to Pedagogical schools is a positive sign, showing that the social demand for teachers and general education teachers is very clear, especially in some subjects such as History and Geography," the Deputy Minister emphasized.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy, Director of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Training, further analyzed that in recent years, with university autonomy, schools have been autonomous in their admission methods and are responsible for clarifying the use of admission methods to ensure fairness among target groups.

“In recent years, early admission has been allocated a relatively large number of quotas, which also affects the number of quotas according to the method of using high school graduation exam results. This is also one of the reasons for the increase in admission scores in recent years,” Associate Professor Thuy said.

With such a trend, according to the department head, there needs to be adjustments so that schools can create fairness for candidates when participating in different admission methods. This is also an important point in adjusting the upcoming admission regulations.

As of the afternoon of August 19, about 200 universities announced their admission scores for 2024, of which the highest-scoring majors were History Pedagogy and Literature Pedagogy of Hanoi National University of Education with 29.3 points (an average of 9.76 points per subject).

The same is true for pedagogical schools or multidisciplinary universities that train teachers. For the University of Education - Hanoi National University or Hanoi Pedagogical University 2 (Vinh Phuc), Thai Nguyen Pedagogical University, Hue Pedagogical University, the highest entrance score is all above 28, almost reaching 29.

The increase in the benchmark score for the Pedagogy major is due to many reasons. Firstly, this year the number of candidates in group C increased by about 20,000 compared to 2023. Meanwhile, the number of candidates with excellent scores has increased "horribly". At the score of 27, in 2023 there were 6,041 candidates, in 2024 the number of candidates with this score increased 4 times. The number of candidates with 28 points increased 6 times compared to 2023, 29 points increased more than 10 times. The number of candidates from 29 points to 30 points in 2024 increased more than 54 times compared to 2023.

Second, according to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training, the number of applications for the Pedagogy group this year increased by 85% compared to last year. Especially at Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City Pedagogical Universities, Hanoi Pedagogical University 2, the increase was about double.

Meanwhile, the target was tightened by the Ministry, only equivalent to last year, compared to the year before, it decreased sharply, partly because many provinces and cities did not order teacher training according to Decree 116 (2020).

Those are the two reasons why the benchmark scores of many majors and schools in the Pedagogical sector have increased rapidly. Many schools that had average benchmark scores last year have failed majors with 9.5 points per subject this year.
