Record-breaking earnings
Latest information from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development shows that in September alone, fruit and vegetable exports earned nearly 1.2 billion USD, a sharp increase of 72.5% compared to the same period last year.
Notably, this is also the first time in the history of the fruit and vegetable industry that the export turnover in a month has exceeded the 1 billion USD mark. This figure also far exceeds the turnover of the seafood industry (920 million USD) and is almost equal to the group of wood and wood products (1.25 billion USD) in September.
By the end of September 2024, fruit and vegetable exports reached nearly 5.9 billion USD, an increase of 39.4% over the same period in 2023. This figure officially broke the historical record of 5.6 billion USD for the whole year of 2023.
Not only did the entire fruit and vegetable industry set a record for the highest revenue in history, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association - also reported that durian exports earned 2.5 billion USD in just 9 months of this year according to the association's preliminary estimate. That means the export turnover of the "king of fruits" has broken the record of 2.24 billion USD for the whole year of 2023.
In the remaining 3 months of this year, it is forecasted that this export strength of our country will still maintain strong growth momentum. Because many types of vegetables and fruits have large output in the harvest season. In particular, durian in October is harvested in large-production growing areas such as Gia Lai and Lam Dong, while the off-season in the Western provinces will also be harvested in the last months of this year.
Among the top 10 main markets for exporting Vietnamese fruits and vegetables, most recorded strong growth, except for the Netherlands. China continues to be the largest market with export turnover in the first 8 months of 2024 reaching more than 3 billion USD, up 36% over the same period last year.
The US, South Korea and Thailand followed with strong import growth of 35-90%. In addition, exports to the German market also doubled compared to the same period last year.
Exporters said that Vietnamese fruits and vegetables are increasingly asserting their position in major markets such as the US, China and South Korea. In particular, Chinese consumers are very fond of Vietnamese durian, banana and mango. In the US, Vietnamese agricultural products have also had more favorable access to this market in the past 9 months.
At the first Vietnamese Fruit Festival recently held in Beijing (China), Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Tran Thanh Nam introduced: "Vietnamese fruits are not only wonderful gifts from nature but also ambassadors of Vietnamese agricultural products, imbued with Vietnamese culture".
He said that currently, there are 12 types of Vietnamese fruit exported to the Chinese market. This year's export turnover is estimated at 4.5 billion USD.
According to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, the boom in fruit and vegetable exports to the Chinese market plays an important role in helping this Vietnamese strength earn 7 billion USD this year as previously set as the target.
Can earn 10 billion USD from Chinese market
Recently, with the efforts of ministries and sectors, Vietnamese fruits have continuously received “visas” to enter major markets. For example, at the end of August, the US and Vietnam completed technical negotiations to license passion fruit next year. In early September, the Plant Protection Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) also announced that Vietnamese passion fruit was officially exported to the Australian market.
In mid-August, Vietnam signed a protocol to export frozen durian and fresh coconut to China. These are fruits that our country has strengths in producing, with output among the top in the world.
At the “Trade Forum, connecting the import-export supply chain of fruits between Vietnam and China”, businesses of the two countries signed agreements to boost fruit and vegetable exports to this billion-people market in the coming time. Accordingly, Chinese businesses said they have a need to buy Vietnamese fruits such as dragon fruit, coconut, durian, and mango.
Along with that, the desire to buy frozen Vietnamese durian with official export documents, buy grapefruit for official export to China.
According to Mr. Co Trieu Hoc - Deputy General Director of Tan Phat Dia Agricultural Products Distribution Center (Beijing, China), Vietnamese agricultural products are increasingly prominent in the northern market of this country. Vietnamese fruits such as mango, banana, dragon fruit, durian, etc. are favored by consumers.
The living standards of Chinese people are improving, and the demand for high-quality agricultural products is also increasing. Therefore, Vietnamese agricultural products have many opportunities to expand their market share in China, especially Vietnamese fruits with delicious and unique flavors, Mr. Hoc commented.
Believing that Vietnamese fruits have great potential in the Chinese market, Mr. Nguyen Quang Hieu - Deputy Director of the Plant Protection Department - pointed out that our strengths are the quality and characteristic flavors of tropical fruits, grown in the specific climate and soil conditions of Vietnam.
With positive signals, Mr. Hieu predicts that fruit and vegetable exports to the Chinese market will reach 4.5-5 billion USD in 2024. Of which, durian is expected to reach more than 3 billion USD by the end of the year.
Notably, with the current growth trend and increasing consumption demand of the Chinese market, Mr. Hieu said experts predict that Vietnamese fruits and vegetables have the potential to reach the export milestone of 10 billion USD in the next few years.
However, the Plant Protection Department leader also noted that the most important thing is to create and bring the real values of Vietnamese fruits to Chinese consumers. Product quality, unique flavors and food safety are the core values that we need to focus on developing and maintaining.
When Chinese consumers perceive these values, they will become loyal customers, creating a solid foundation for the long-term development of the Vietnamese fruit industry, Mr. Hieu emphasized.
Breaking the record of last year, the 'king fruit' is soaring to the top of history . Hundreds of millions of Chinese people are crazy about durian, spending billions of dollars each year to buy it. Meanwhile, Vietnam has made a fortune thanks to exports, with revenue from selling the "king fruit" in 9 months estimated at 2.5 billion USD - an unprecedented record in history.
