Immediately after detecting African swine fever in Tan Lam Huong and Thach Ngoc communes, Thach Ha district (Ha Tinh) focused on measures to isolate, suppress the epidemic and proactively prevent the epidemic in areas where the epidemic had not yet appeared.

On November 25, at the households of Mr. Thai Van Binh (Tien Thuong village, Tan Lam Huong commune) and Mr. Le Thanh Hai (Quy Hai village, Thach Ngoc commune), there were cases of pigs dying of unknown causes. In Mr. Binh's household, initially, 1 pig died out of a total herd of 23 pigs, and at Mr. Hai's household, 2 pigs died out of a total herd of 7 pigs.

Tan Lam Huong Commune has set up an epidemic warning checkpoint at the entrance to Tien Thuong village and disinfected vehicles entering and leaving the village.

Immediately after receiving the information, the Center for Application of Science and Technology and Protection of Plants and Livestock in Thach Ha District went directly to the households to collect samples and send them for testing to determine the disease in order to promptly have a treatment plan. By the afternoon of November 27, all results detected the virus that causes African swine fever. Currently, the relevant agencies have destroyed the entire 2 pig herds of 2 households with 30 pigs.

Mr. Tran Van Cuong - Vice Chairman of Tan Lam Huong Commune People's Committee said: "As soon as we discovered the unusual death of pigs, while waiting for the test results, the commune coordinated with the people to sprinkle lime to disinfect and sterilize the barns and propagate, remind the people to closely monitor, update the situation of the pig herd and absolutely not move the pigs out of the area. Along with destroying the remaining pigs in the 2 pig herds that had pigs that died from African swine fever, the commune set up a warning barricade in the epidemic area and sprayed disinfectants, disinfected and sterilized the barns".

According to Mr. Cuong, in addition to implementing measures to handle pigs infected with the disease in households, Tan Lam Huong commune also conducted a review of the number of livestock in Tien Thuong village and other villages in the area; informed families to closely monitor the situation of their livestock, promptly report to the authorities when abnormalities occur.

30 pigs of 2 households were destroyed.

After detecting the outbreak of African swine fever in the area, the authorities of Thach Ngoc commune are now focusing on epidemic prevention and control. After destroying the infected pigs, the commune is stepping up propaganda and widely announcing epidemic prevention and control solutions so that people can be proactive.

Secretary of the Thach Ngoc Commune Party Committee Le Thanh Hai said: “We are actively guiding people to proactively and synchronously implement disease prevention and control measures; clean and disinfect the environment of the breeding area and related areas, and at the same time, carry out care and feeding to improve the resistance of livestock. Specialized agencies grasp the situation of livestock and poultry epidemics to each household in each village and breeding facility to monitor, detect early, report epidemics promptly and handle them thoroughly when new epidemics arise, not allowing them to spread widely.”

Thach Ha people spread lime powder and disinfect barns.

In addition, to proactively prevent, control, contain and suppress the epidemic, the District People's Committee promptly supported 700 liters of chemicals, and localities proactively purchased more than 2 tons of lime powder to disinfect the environment, especially in livestock areas, main traffic routes, concentrated livestock facilities, concentrated slaughterhouses, animal product markets, etc.

Mr. Nguyen Van Sau - Vice Chairman of Thach Ha District People's Committee said: "After determining that African swine fever occurred in the area, the District People's Committee issued a telegram, requesting the authorities of communes, towns, relevant departments and branches to focus on directing the drastic and synchronous implementation of urgent solutions to contain the epidemic; at the same time, deploy solutions to prevent and control the epidemic in areas where the epidemic has not yet occurred. Absolutely do not hide the epidemic, do not sell, slaughter, or dump the carcasses of sick or suspected sick animals.

Leaders of Thach Ha district inspected epidemic prevention and control work in communes where the epidemic has not yet occurred to promptly take proactive measures to prevent the epidemic.

Currently, the total pig herd in the area is very large with more than 39,000 heads. Along with that, livestock households are increasing their herds to meet the demand for the Lunar New Year; buying, selling and transporting activities are increasing. Therefore, the risk of dangerous infectious diseases arising and spreading in the coming time is very high. The district will continue to focus on disease prevention and control; review and grasp the total livestock herd, the number of livestock households and farms, closely monitor the situation to detect early and handle diseases promptly. Farmers are advised to sell pigs immediately when they reach the age of selling; do not increase or re-herd when disease safety conditions are not ensured. Farmers must have a clear origin when buying breeding pigs; quarantine and monitor before entering the herd, and fully vaccinate against diseases.
