In recent times, after gradually overcoming difficulties and challenges in terms of unfavorable weather conditions, the risk of disease, and fluctuating market prices, the province's pig farming sector has gradually recovered and stabilized; farmers are interested in investing in herd restoration, especially continuing to develop livestock farming in the direction of industrial and semi-industrial farms, and value chain-linked farming.

According to information from localities, herd restoration is currently showing a slight upward trend, especially in the pig herd. The total output of fresh meat for sale in 2024 is estimated at 63,128 tons, reaching 104.3% of the 2024 plan (plan of 60,500 tons), contributing to growth in the agriculture, forestry and fishery sector exceeding the set plan. The total output of fresh meat for sale in the first quarter of 2025 in the whole province reached nearly 17,000 tons, estimated at more than 25% of the annual plan.

The province pays attention to the development, improvement of quality, and development of livestock in general, and pig farming in particular. High-quality, productive livestock breeds are imported and widely developed. The proportion of foreign pigs and crossbred pigs accounts for 95% of the total pig herd in the province. The total pig herd raised on farms accounts for 57% of the total pig herd in the province.

Livestock farming methods continue to develop towards industrial farms, applying high technology and bio-safety. The province currently has 699 livestock and poultry farms, of which 25 are large-scale farms, 209 are medium-scale farms, and 465 are small-scale farms.

There are currently 135 high-tech livestock farms, linked with businesses. Industrial and semi-industrial livestock models applying technical advances such as new high-yield breeds, closed-cage farming, automated feeding, watering, disinfection, etc. continue to be widely applied.

Attracting investment in livestock farming continues to receive attention. The agricultural and environmental sectors have coordinated to participate in appraising two investment projects in the livestock sector in the province, namely the medicinal herb nursery and high-tech pig farming project with a scale of 14,000 pigs in Khe Lim, Cam Thanh commune, Cam Lo district with a total investment of 86 billion VND by Nghia Thanh Agricultural Company; the Truong Phuoc pig farming project with a scale of 24,000 pigs in Hai Lam commune, Hai Lang district with a total investment of 99 billion VND.

According to the Plan to implement the livestock development strategy for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2045 in Quang Tri province (Plan No. 137/KH-UBND province), by 2030, the province will develop a pig herd of about 350,000 - 400,000 pigs; of which over 60% of the total herd will be raised industrially.

Vision to 2045, develop livestock into a modern technical economic sector and industrialize most stages from production, processing, preservation to connecting to consumption markets; over 80% of livestock products produced on farms are strictly controlled.

In the immediate future, in 2025, the goal of the agricultural and environmental sector is to achieve a meat output of 63,000 tons. To achieve this goal, improving the quality of forecasting, information and propaganda work, promptly grasping price developments of pork and pork on the market to advise farmers on the time of herd restoration and sale; promoting biosafety pig farming; strengthening disease control, especially African swine fever, foot-and-mouth disease; widely applying biosafety and disease-safe pig farming models for all types of farming... must be given top priority.

In addition, the agricultural and environmental sectors need to support and encourage investment in developing pig farming according to the value chain associated with product traceability; building large-scale livestock complexes, applying high technology with the role of enterprises as the focus. Strengthening environmental control and improving the efficiency of waste treatment in pig farming, associated with organic fertilizer production and renewable energy production... Strengthening digital transformation in the livestock industry in general and pig farming in particular, applying technical advances, circular economy and high-tech farming models to pig farming.

In the immediate future, gradually restore and stabilize pig farming production; encourage pig herd restoration in farms to ensure biosafety and disease-free farming processes; develop crossbred sow herds among the people; develop high-yield foreign pig herds, preserve and develop Van Pa pigs and crossbred wild boars using organic farming methods, create high-quality specialty products associated with ecotourism, integrate multi-values (culinary, cultural, tourism, ecological and economic), and bring stable income to pig farmers.
