A few days ago, a fanpage with more than 530,000 followers posted a video of a group of dozens of women doing aerobics on the street, taking up almost the entire walkway. There was no praise, the video received a lot of criticism.
Out on the street like at home
Stories of people exercising while showing off have been popping up all over social media recently. In mid-May, in Thai Binh, two groups of women brought out yoga mats to practice yoga in the middle of the street.
Immediately afterwards, at the Purple Flamboyant Road (Tuyen Lam Lake National Tourist Area, Da Lat City, Lam Dong Province), a group of five middle-aged women parked their bikes to exercise right on the road. Previously, the story of many people cycling to exercise but encroaching on the car lane, lining up side by side, running red lights and even cutting in front of cars... had caused public outrage and received much criticism.
Not only adults, recently, social networks have also spread a video of a group of 5 children in Da Nang city taking advantage of the red light to dance right on the white line under the road for pedestrians...
Not only causing harm to traffic safety, many people exercising in public places also do it in a "know yourself but not others" manner, such as playing music too loudly, dressing indecently... Social networks once spread a clip of several households in an apartment building reacting strongly to a group of women practicing folk dancing, playing loud music in a residential area, talking and making noise non-stop for hours. Notably, this happened many times, over a long period of time and was reminded, even begged but still had no effect before the incident became tense.
Practicing in living spaces is not enough, many groups also bring folk dance and yoga performances to weddings without caring whether it is appropriate or not. Because for them, as long as there is a stage and they can perform, nothing can stop them.
Know yourself, know your enemy
Speaking specifically about folk dance, it cannot be denied that it has created a positive movement that has spread widely. Folk dance clubs have appeared from big cities to remote villages and hamlets. Notably, it does not discriminate against age because even old men and women in their 70s and 80s can participate in training to improve their health.
There are many clips of old ladies with missing teeth and white hair dancing folk dance, although their movements are still awkward and uneven, but they still receive a lot of praise. The folk dance movement has created cohesion in residential communities, built a collective spirit, and lived healthily and beautifully. Therefore, in most community activities, folk dance is always an art performance that has a very high impact on stirring up the movement. Later, it also spread to offices, units, schools... with many professional competitions, nationwide scale.
In a broader sense, physical activities such as folk dancing, yoga, aerobics, dancing, cycling, etc. are inherently very useful and beneficial not only for individuals. However, when these activities are abused, even violating the law, forcing authorities to warn and punish, etc., they clearly have many negative effects.
One thing in common in the recent incidents that have caused public outrage is that the actions of most of these groups were carried out intentionally. The main reason is that they like to show off, like to share images, videos, and livestream on social networks but lack awareness and do not foresee the consequences.
Currently, in terms of law, there are regulations to punish violations of road traffic laws such as gathering in large numbers causing traffic obstruction or performing illegal sports activities; violating noise regulations, causing noise exceeding the permitted level... However, the main purpose of promulgating and applying the law is to prevent violations, while correcting violations that have occurred or punishing violators only plays a secondary role. Therefore, the eternal problem still starts with the story of awareness and raising awareness from each individual.
Exercising in public places brings health benefits to each person and the whole community when it is done in the right place, in the right place. No one will condemn folk dance practice sessions in parks, cultural houses, community centers... Similarly, yoga or aerobics will be more suitable in gym spaces. For cyclists, riding in the right lane is also a basic principle when participating in traffic, first of all to protect yourself.
At that time, these activities are not only healthy for both body and mind but also safe and healthy for the community. I think, before practicing any sport, equipping yourself with basic awareness and knowledge is never redundant.
