* Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien talked about issues related to the import of meat and by-products to Vietnam in recent times. Imported products must fully meet Vietnam's very strict standards and regulations. This is similar to the fact that Vietnam wants to export goods to markets that must fully meet their requirements.

“Our country now has a position and potential. Therefore, not just any product can be poured in,” said the Deputy Minister.

He also cited that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has issued Circular 04 regulating the quarantine of terrestrial animals and animal products. This document has been amended and supplemented with a number of points to more strictly control animal products.

Accordingly, from the effective date of the circular (May 6, 2024) to September 25, 55 imported meat and livestock product shipments were found positive for Salmonella (bacteria causing diarrhea, fever, etc.) out of a total of 6,679 shipments tested for Salmonella.

Without Salmonella testing, over 1,319 tons of animal meat contaminated with Salmonella will be imported into Vietnam, posing a very high risk of causing disease, food insecurity, and affecting the health of consumers.

Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has worked with 11 delegations of counselors from countries that are allowed to export meat to our country. Vietnam has responded fully, with scientific and practical basis on the regulations for importing this group of products. Circular No. 04 has complied with the provisions of international law and has not caused difficulties for import enterprises in the past.

“We must be strict to protect consumers as well as the domestic livestock industry,” Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien emphasized.

In the coming time, the competent agencies of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will continue to review the entire process of importing meat and edible livestock by-products, while stepping up anti-smuggling activities to prevent the transportation of smuggled chickens and pigs into Vietnam.
