On March 23, new Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced an early election on April 28, saying he needed strong authority to deal with the threat of tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.

According to Reuters news agency, Mr. Carney hopes to take advantage of the Liberal Party's significant recovery in the polls since January, when Mr. Trump began threatening Canada and former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation.
"We are facing the most serious crisis of our time because of President Trump's unreasonable trade measures and his threats to our sovereignty," Prime Minister Carney told reporters, after the Governor General - the personal representative of King Charles, Canada's head of state - approved the request to hold an election.
According to the new Canadian Prime Minister, there is still a lot of work to do to protect, build and invest in the North American country as well as unite the country and "that is why I ask for a strong positive mandate from my fellow citizens".
Mr Carney, a former central bank governor with no previous political or campaigning experience, won the Liberal leadership two weeks ago by convincing party members that he was the best person to take on President Trump.
He now has five weeks to convince Canadians that he is the Liberals, who have been in power since 2015 and were trailing the official opposition Conservatives at the start of the year, polls show.
"We've gone from an election where people wanted change to one that's really about leadership," said Darrell Bricker, CEO of research firm Ipsos Public Affairs. "The Conservatives' ability to attack the Liberals has been significantly reduced, because people are focused on the present and the near future, not what's happened in the last 10 years."
On March 17, polling firm Angus Reid released the results of a poll of 4,009 people showing that the Liberal Party received 42% support and the Conservative Party received 37%, with a margin of error of about 1.5%. Another online poll of 1,568 people by Leger Polling Firm released by the National Post on the same day showed that the Liberal Party received 42% support and the Conservative Party received 39%, with a margin of error of about 2.5%.
