Coach Shin Tae-yong was fired by the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) on January 6, 2025, after five years of leading the national team due to problems related to management, communication and tactics. Coach Shin Tae-yong returned to Korea on January 26, 2025. Many Indonesian fans saw him off at Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Tangerang when he left.
"Hello everyone. I returned to Korea safely and had a happy Lunar New Year holiday thanks to the warm support of Indonesian fans," Shin Tae-yong shared on his personal Instagram on February 1. "I still remember the warm welcome I received at Soekarno-Hatta Airport," the Korean coach added.
Coach Shin Tae-yong has returned to Korea
Shin Tae-yong said he kept quiet because of his love for Indonesia and its football. However, the former South Korean coach said that some Indonesian media continue to spread false information. The 1970-born coach did not explain specifically about the rumors that he denied. However, according to a social media analysis study by Drone Emprit, coach Shin Tae-yong was accused of using 'buzzers' (social media accounts that intentionally manipulate public opinion).
"I want to emphasize once again that none of the rumors are true. If this situation continues, things will not end as easily as this time," Mr. Shin Tae-yong affirmed.
" Finally, I want to ask those who are attacking me with false information. Is your purpose to destroy the honor that Indonesian football and I have built together? Does that help Indonesian football? ", the 54-year-old coach asked.
Earlier, the Football Institute released research results from Drone Emprit, claiming that coach Shin Tae-yong used tricks on social media. The Football Institute's founder, Budi Setiawan, said Drone Emprit's research proved that there were well-organized "bot" accounts to create a wave of support for Shin Tae-yong when he faced criticism and was fired in Indonesia.
"From this study, it can be seen that the hashtag #STYstay (coach Shin Tae-yong stays) was promoted by the buzzer. This result is similar to the research of the Football Institute, showing that there are benefits beyond football related to this incident ," Budi said during a discussion of the research results of Drone Emprit in Jakarta on January 30.
Budi also pointed out that the support for Shin Tae-yong after his dismissal could be the result of social media manipulation. "Despite clear explanations for the dismissal, there are still many debates, which raises the question of whether someone is behind the scenes creating public opinion," Budi added.
