The decision to let middle school and high school students take a leave of absence has received broad consensus from teachers and parents.
Immediately after Circular 29 of the Ministry of Education and Training took effect, all localities were not allowed to organize extra classes in schools. At the same time, they piloted a model of teaching 2 sessions/day, allowing middle and high school students to have Saturday and Sunday off before expanding it to the general public.
As of February 10, at least 18 localities have been piloting giving students Saturdays off to have more time to play and increase concentration on studying during the week.

Since 2019, the Ministry of Education and Training has provided guidance on teaching 2 sessions/day for junior high and high school levels. Accordingly, if teaching all day, schools are not allowed to teach more than 4 periods in the morning for junior high school and 5 periods for high school.
The maximum number of afternoon periods is 3, the maximum number of periods per week is 42 for middle school and 48 for high school. Schools are proactive in arranging a schedule of 5 or 6 days/week. However, the implementation of 2 sessions/day and 5 days/week is related to facilities, number of classrooms as well as teaching staff.
The arrangement of Saturday off for junior high school and high school students has received the majority of approval from teachers, parents and students, helping to extend rest time and increase concentration on studying during the week.
