Driving a car while your driving license has expired is a traffic violation and will be severely punished according to Decree 123/2021/ND-CP amending Decree 100/2019/ND-CP.
According to Clause 11, Article 2 of Decree 123/2021/ND-CP, drivers of cars and similar vehicles with expired driving licenses will be fined at specific levels:
Fine from 5-7 million VND for driving license expired less than 3 months.
Fine from 10-12 million VND for driving license expired for 3 months or more.

It should be noted that previously, drivers of cars and similar vehicles with expired driving licenses had lower fines than now.
Specifically, a fine of 400-600 thousand VND will be imposed for a driving license that has expired for less than 6 months.

So, according to current regulations, how many years is the validity period of different types of car driving licenses?
According to the provisions of Article 17 of Circular 12/2017/TT-BGTVT (amended by Circular 01/2021/TT-BGTVT), the specific provisions are as follows:
- A Class B1 driver's license is valid until the driver is 55 years old for women and 60 years old for men. In case the driver is over 45 years old for women and over 50 years old for men, the driver's license is issued for 10 years from the date of issue.
- Class A4 and B2 driving licenses are valid for 10 years from the date of issue.
- Driving licenses of classes C, D, E, FB2, FC, FD, FE are valid for 5 years from the date of issue.
- The validity of a driver's license is stated on the driver's license.
