Turn trash into money
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Trang - President of the Women's Union of Thanh Ha Ward said that since 2010, the union has implemented the model "Our family's trash can", calling on women to participate in sorting waste at the source.
From the effectiveness of this model, the City Women's Union has built 13 "Green Living Women's Clubs" in 13/13 communes and wards through many forms such as: women's groups sorting waste at source, women's groups carrying baskets to the market, women's groups of organic vegetables... with more than 1,300 members.
“You are active propagandists in guiding and mobilizing people to classify waste at source, use electricity and water economically, and reuse discarded items to grow flowers, vegetables, and make toys... Through the model, many branches and women's groups have used recycled waste to sell to raise funds for activities and give gifts to support women and children in especially difficult circumstances,” said Ms. Trang.

By 2018, all levels of the association in Hoi An simultaneously launched the model of “Recycling Garbage Collection Team”. Every week, the team visits each household to collect cans, plastic bottles, etc. to raise funds to help women and children in need.
In 2022, the association will continue to build the model "Green House - Accompanying to overcome difficulties" with a total value of more than 250 million VND, located at 54 locations in 12 communes and wards. With the support of the International Union for Conservation of Nature - IUCN and the Green Development Support Center - GreenHub, the model of connecting the value chain for low-value plastic recycling right in Hoi An, creating a spread in the community, attracting a large number of female members and people to participate.
Ms. Ngo Thi Tuyet Nhung - President of the Women's Union of Hoi An City said that with the aim of "turning trash into money", in the past 15 years, the association's facilities in Hoi An City have built a fund of more than 750 million VND, donated more than 2,000 gifts, 58 health insurance cards, sponsored 12 children and provided livelihoods to 5 disadvantaged women.
Accompanying to overcome difficulties
In fact, “Green House - Accompanying to overcome difficulties” is a new development from the models of women participating in environmental protection in the locality, aiming to classify waste at the source, propagating to people to reduce disposable plastic waste, reducing pressure on the environment.

The Women's Union staff of 12 communes and wards were instructed by Reform Company (the purchasing unit) on how to classify and collect low-value waste; agreed on purchasing prices, instructed on transportation methods; monitored, recorded, audited and transported waste to recycling facilities. All 54 "green houses" were located on the map; 12 volunteers from the Environmental Club supported auditing, recording data and transporting waste to the purchasing unit every 3 days.
The associations at all levels have organized training, provided guidance on methods, processes and shared experiences in managing and operating the model; and created a skit "Say no to plastic waste - A door to peace" for communication.
“The characteristic of the model is to focus on collecting “refome” waste, which is waste that is difficult to decompose, specifically plastic bags, foam boxes, candy boxes, milk cartons, etc. to reduce pressure on the city in protecting the environment, creating a fund to help overcome difficulties,” Ms. Ngo Thi Tuyet Nhung shared.
In 2023, the “green houses” collected more than 2.7 tons of recyclable waste including plastic bottles, beer cans, soft drinks, paper, scrap metal, nylon bags, foam boxes, milk cartons, etc., raising more than 100 million VND. From this fund, 244 gifts and 2 health insurance cards were given to women with serious illnesses and in difficult circumstances, and 6 orphans were sponsored.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Van - Head of the Hoi An City Party Committee's Mass Mobilization Committee, the model is effective from each block, family, and alley because it not only "revives" waste but also mobilizes the cooperation of cadres, women's union members, people, and the environmentally friendly business community.
“The most important thing is that the activities of the “green houses” have supported women to overcome difficulties together and raised people’s awareness of waste classification at source. The spread of the model is due to the role and responsibility of the association in building appropriate models; meeting the needs and aspirations and attracting the active participation of cadres and members,” said Ms. Van.
