Women in Thang Binh compete in "Skilled Mass Mobilization"

"Skillful" in environmental protection

Binh Minh commune currently has 118 boats and ships. The average seafood catch of fishermen in the last 3 years has reached 9,000 tons/year.

However, plastic waste directly released into the marine environment has been affecting the lives of many species, leading to the degradation of marine biodiversity, particularly coral reef ecosystems.

Recognizing this, in April 2022, the Women's Union of Binh Minh commune established the model "Collecting plastic waste from the sea to the shore, turning waste into money" with the participation of 25 boat owners.

To date, 40 fishing vessels have participated. On average, each fishing vessel brings ashore about 30-50 kg of plastic waste after a fishing trip. Of this, about 80% is recyclable, while the rest is more difficult to recycle, such as salt bags and food packaging.

Recyclable waste such as cans and water bottles are collected and sold by the Women's Union to raise funds. The total amount raised from collecting and selling waste to date is over 41 million VND. With this money, the union has supported 12 women in urgent need, sponsored 4 orphans, and assisted 6 fishermen whose boats sank.

Ms. Tran Thi Bich Ngoc, Vice President of the Women's Union of Binh Minh commune, said that the model has maintained a fund to support and assist women, children, and fishermen. Furthermore, the collective efforts of the model's members demonstrate the love for the sea that each resident of Binh Minh possesses.

"For them, the sea is life, their homeland, and their whole existence, so in one way or another, that love is expressed through daily actions to collectively raise awareness and encourage everyone to join hands in protecting the marine environment," said Ms. Ngoc.

Every year, the Thang Binh District Women's Union directs its branches to concretize the tasks of the union and the locality to build, maintain, and expand the "Effective Mass Mobilization" model in various fields, incorporating it into emulation agreements for the branches to focus on implementing.

Ms. Tran Thi Thu Nguyet, Vice President of the Thang Binh District Women's Union, said that the union focuses on raising awareness about implementing the "Effective Mass Mobilization" model in conjunction with "Studying and following the thoughts, ethics, and style of Ho Chi Minh ," the emulation movement "Building the Vietnamese woman of the new era," and building new rural areas and civilized urban areas... From there, they have built and maintained the operation of 139 "Effective Mass Mobilization" models in various fields of the union's activities.

Typical examples in building new rural areas and civilized urban areas include the Women's Union promoting the role of its members through models such as "Clean House, Beautiful Garden," "Building a family with 5 no's, 3 clean's, 5 yes's, and 3 clean's," and "Women sorting solid waste at source"...

Notably, the Women's Union of the district launched the construction of 62 self-managed "bright - green - clean - beautiful" roads, eliminating long-standing garbage dumps and creating a clean and beautiful environment in the localities.

Implementing the "Effective Mass Mobilization" emulation movement in conjunction with "Promoting the study and emulation of Ho Chi Minh's thought, morality, and style" in the field of social welfare, the Women's Union at all levels has developed 31 models, attracting more than 3,000 members to participate. Through these models, more than 3 tons of rice and nearly 50 million VND have been collected to help more than 300 disadvantaged and orphaned women and children.

A highlight of the "Effective Mass Mobilization" movement is the recent response and implementation of the "Godmother Program" launched by the Vietnam Women's Union at all levels. To date, the union is sponsoring 282 children with amounts ranging from 300,000 VND to 2,000,000 VND per month per child.

"Every year, the association continues to maintain and improve the quality of activities of the 'Effective Mass Mobilization' models, focusing on content and forms of activities that suit practical needs to attract members to participate."

"In addition, we need to regularly inspect, monitor, and evaluate the effectiveness of 'effective mass mobilization' models, promptly identify and replicate advanced models and best practices in various fields. At the same time, we should learn from experience and overcome limitations to implement the model's activities more effectively," Ms. Nguyet said.
