Over the past 7 years, children in the Binh Phuoc 1 Children's Environment Club (Thuan Phuoc Ward, Hai Chau District, Da Nang City) have participated in collecting and sorting recyclable waste to raise funds for activities, including helping those in difficult circumstances. The amount raised to date has reached nearly 300 million VND.

Although the number is not large, the children work very actively and have a plan. Mr. Pham Cong Luong, Secretary of the Binh Phuoc 1 Residential Area Party Cell and founder of the "Binh Phuoc 1 Children's Environment Club", said that the Club regularly has 20-25 members participating, all of whom are students from grades 1 to 7 in the city.

Starting operations in early 2018 with 7 children, realizing that the Club is useful for the community, on July 19, 2019, the People's Committee of Thuan Phuoc Ward issued a decision to establish the Club, officially named Binh Phuoc 1 Children's Environmental Club. The Club's activities are fixed on Saturday or Sunday afternoons every week.

Led by Party Secretary Pham Cong Luong, the children gathered at the designated location to receive gloves and masks and began to work according to the predetermined plan. The children pushed the carts to each neighborhood in the residential area to collect recyclable waste, then brought them to the collection point to sort the recyclable waste for the second time, sell it and collect money. The total amount of money raised from selling recyclable waste in the past time was nearly 270 million VND.

"The club used this money to organize International Children's Day June 1, Mid-Autumn Festival, support students in difficult circumstances, visit club members when they are sick...

The children also did many other meaningful things such as: visiting Vietnamese Heroic Mothers, wounded soldiers, and people with disabilities; giving rice to poor households on the occasion of Lunar New Year.

In addition, the children also gave gifts to doctors on the front lines fighting the Covid-19 epidemic, sent gifts to children in the North affected by storm No. 3 (storm Yagi); organized folk games when possible...", said Mr. Pham Cong Luong.

To put the club's activities into order as they are now, Mr. Pham Cong Luong has been persistent and has promoted the meaning of environmental protection to students and their families. At first, the club members did not know each other, did not understand the work of waste classification as well as the purpose and meaning of this work.

Many parents were hesitant to let their children participate because they feared it would affect their health and studies. But then they saw that the club's activities were well-organized and provided with full protective clothing.

Along with that, this work also helps children strengthen real connections, at the same time, information about the fund is public... so many parents have let their children participate. Some families even let all 3 children participate. Especially, when children participate, almost 100% of parents support and respond.

"After a period of activity, the children have coordinated very well with each other, and this child knows how to guide the new participants. The waste classification is done according to the requirements of the urban environmental company, so the children are always exposed to new ways of doing things," said Mr. Luong.

As a club member, Nguyen Tran Anh Vy shared: "Before, I heard a lot about waste classification at source but had not practiced it. Since joining the club, I have found this to be a useful activity, beneficial for myself and the community. Through this, I also feel more mature."

Ho Le Khoi, a 7th grader, has been a member of the club since its founding and affirmed: "I will replace Mr. Luong to maintain the club when he gets older, so that I can work with the kids to do something useful for the city."

According to Mr. Pham Cong Luong, the club will soon admit more members. Members over 14 years old will be granted a certificate by the ward People's Committee and will stop participating in the club to focus on studying.

Accompanying the members of the "Binh Phuoc 1 Children's Environment Club" for many years to improve the living environment, Mr. Pham Cong Luong was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Prime Minister. He also won the C prize in the 4th "Initiative for the Community" Contest organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor. In addition, he was also awarded many certificates of merit and awards from Da Nang city for environmental activities.
