Parents worry about their children's gaming addiction as schools tighten extra tutoring

According to the regulations on extra teaching and learning recently issued by the Ministry of Education and Training, only 3 groups of people are allowed to take extra classes at school. Before this regulation, many parents expressed their concern that their children would become addicted to games, social networks, etc. when there is no school or teacher to manage them.

Regarding extra teaching and learning in schools, the new circular stipulates that the subjects eligible for extra teaching in schools include 3 groups: Students whose final semester study results are not satisfactory; Students selected by the school to train excellent students; Final year students who voluntarily register for entrance exam review and graduation exam review according to the school's education plan. The school is responsible for organizing extra teaching for the above-mentioned students and is not allowed to collect money from students.

For many families, especially those in big cities, tutoring is not only a way to supplement knowledge but also a solution for schools to help parents manage their children. Because while most parents have to work all day, the children only study at school for one session, the other session is left unsupervised.

Worried about the upcoming half-day off at home for her 8th grade son, Ms. Pham Phuong Loan (Dong Da District, Hanoi) said: “Up until now, in addition to regular classes in the morning, my child has 3 extra classes at school. On days when my child goes to school all day, with a teacher supervising, I feel very secure. On other afternoons at home, without adults supervising, my child plays a lot of games. When my parents take away the computer, my child plays on the phone. When my parents limit the time spent on the phone, my child watches games on TV… I have a headache not knowing how to manage my child when he has so much free time at home.”

The worries of Ms. Dang Thi Binh (My Loc, Nam Dinh City) are even greater. “My child is in puberty, his personality is constantly changing. If there are no teachers or adults to supervise him, I am worried that he will get involved in online games or be lured by bad friends. Previously, when he took extra classes at school, he was managed by the school. Now, I am afraid that he will gather and hang out with friends who are too busy playing, so he is easily affected by negative influences from the outside environment. I see that taking extra classes at school does not put financial pressure on people because the tuition is very cheap, and it does not put pressure on students to study. Not all students are conscious of self-study, not all parents have time to manage their children. That is why we still hope that our children can take extra classes at school,” Ms. Binh shared.

For a long time, extra classes at school have been organized at a lower cost than at outside tutoring centers, and at the same time, the school's teachers understand the abilities and characteristics of each student, helping them improve their knowledge appropriately.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Thanh, a parent of a 10th grader in Ho Chi Minh City, said: “The cost of extra classes at school is only a fraction of the cost at centers, but my child studies with his own teachers and understands the lessons more deeply. If we ban it completely, we will have to send our child to centers, which are expensive, far away, and we don’t know the quality.”

The regulation banning tutoring is an effort to reduce academic pressure, promote self-study and more comprehensive development of students. However, for this regulation to be truly effective, many parents hope that the Ministry of Education and Training needs to come up with appropriate support solutions, such as increasing extracurricular activities, developing clubs in schools so that students can both study and play in a healthy way...
