At the invitation of President of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha led a Vietnamese delegation to attend the Global Gateway Forum organized by the European Union (EU) from October 25-26 in Belgium.

The forum is part of the EU's Global Gateway Strategy, with the participation of 500 delegates, including 25 Presidents and Heads of Government, many Government leaders and Ministers of countries, leaders of the United Nations, the World Bank, the World Health Organization, the World Trade Organization and many leaders of businesses, investment funds, and socio-political organizations.

With the theme “Stronger Together through Sustainable Investment”, the Forum aims to enhance coordination among countries, international organizations and the private sector in unifying directions and mobilizing resources, increasing investment in high-quality infrastructure, human resource development, and health systems for sustainable development goals.

During the two working days, the Leaders will focus on discussing initiatives and solutions to increase investment in six priority areas such as green energy and green hydrogen transition, smart transport infrastructure development, digital connectivity, essential raw materials, improving healthcare capacity, education and training.

In his opening speech at the Forum, the EC President affirmed that climate change is a challenge but also brings many opportunities and the EU prioritizes mobilizing clean technology, renewable energy, and encouraging private capital along with government resources to contribute to the global green development process.

Ms. Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the projects being implemented within the framework of the Strategy, including solar energy projects in Vietnam. Leaders of the countries attending the Forum highly appreciated the results of the implementation of the Global Gateway Strategy to date with 90 projects spread across Asia and Eastern Europe.

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, the rotating chair of the G7, affirmed that the G7 is ready to accompany the EU in implementing the Global Gateway Strategy.

Speaking at the high-level dialogue on Green Energy Transition and Green Hydrogen, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha assessed that the EU's Global Gateway Strategy has entered the practical implementation phase, proposing many specific and technical measures.

The Deputy Prime Minister stated that the Covid-19 pandemic and climate change are urgent global issues that stem from the development model. Similar to Covid-19, overcoming the challenges of climate change will require joint efforts from countries, through sharing resources and experiences, and supporting the reduction of development gap because no country is safe if another country is not safe.

The Deputy Prime Minister affirmed: “If vaccines are the solution to the pandemic, green energy and green hydrogen are the solutions to climate change.” As one of the four countries that have established a partnership for equitable energy transition with developed countries, Vietnam is ready to cooperate with other countries to act together for sustainable development goals by sharing its potential and strengths.

At the same time, the Deputy Prime Minister also suggested that developed countries and the private sector increase the provision of technology, green financial resources, support human resource training, and management experience so that the whole world can achieve the net emission target by 2050.

During the discussion session, delegates shared and highly appreciated Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha's viewpoint that equitable transition requires support from developed countries to developing countries and that government finance needs to guide and direct private finance.

The Global Gateway Strategy is an initiative announced by the EU at the end of 2021 with the goal of mobilizing 300 billion Euros in the period 2022-2027 for development investment projects, connecting infrastructure to promote sustainable development, and solving global issues.

With six thematic discussion sessions, this is the first large-scale forum organized within the framework of the Global Gateway Strategy to enhance coordination among countries, international organizations, governments and the private sector in unifying directions and mobilizing resources, and acting together for sustainable development goals.
