While the mutual lawsuit in the courts in the UK and Vietnam between EO and Sconnect Vietnam - the owner of Wolfoo - has not yet been settled, Sconnect Vietnam has just received 1.3 billion VND in compensation in the Wolfoo copyright infringement lawsuit in China.
Wolfoo cartoon owner just received 1.3 billion VND in copyright infringement compensation in China
News from Sconnect Vietnam on October 4 said that this company, through its partner Leadjoy Shanghai in China, was compensated 400,000 yuan (equivalent to 1.3 billion VND) in a lawsuit against Wuwei Fenglingdu Television and Media Company for copyright infringement of the cartoon Wolfoo on the Youku and Tencent video platforms.
The case was heard by the Wuwei City Intermediate People's Court. (Wuwei), Gansu province, China will handle the case from November 2022.
Sconnect said that in recent years in the Chinese market , the Wolfoo cartoon produced and copyrighted by this company has been popular with many children, leading to many copyright infringements of this film.
On April 1, 2022, Sconnect Vietnam signed an "animation distribution licensing contract" with Shanghai Leadjoy Company.
Under the contract, Sconnect has authorized Shanghai Leadjoy to release Wolfoo Channel animations in China on digital platforms such as Tencent, Youku, iQiyi...
Accordingly, the number of licensed episodes is more than 1,000 episodes with a duration of 2-3 minutes/episode and a licensing period of 3 years.
Sconnect also grants " intellectual property rights protection" rights to Shanghai Leadjoy to represent Sconnect in handling intellectual property-related activities and protecting the Wolfoo brand in China.
When Shanghai Leadjoy discovered Wuwei Fenglingdu Company's copyright infringement of hundreds of Wolfoo episodes on Youku platform and Tencent video platform, it contacted the company's legal representative to request the deletion of all videos and request compensation, but was rejected by Wuwei Fenglingdu.
In late April 2022, Youku and Tencent video removed the Wolfoo episodes uploaded by Wuwei Fenglingdu due to copyright infringement. However, Wuwei Fenglingdu still intentionally uploaded some additional Wolfoo episodes on Tencent video.
Therefore, Shanghai Leadjoy decided to entrust Shanghai Jinmao Law Firm to file a copyright infringement lawsuit against Wuwei Fenglingdu Company.
In November 2022, Shanghai Jinmao filed a lawsuit and sent the case to the Intermediate People's Court of Wuwei City, Gansu Province, China.
After many court mediations and explanations of the legal consequences, Wuwei Fenglingdu Company finally agreed to pay Shanghai Leadjoy 400,000 yuan in compensation, equivalent to 1.3 billion VND, for copyright infringement.
On June 14, Wuwei Fenglingdu fully paid this compensation fee to Leadjoy Shanghai and Leadjoy has just completed transferring the compensation to Sconnect Vietnam - the owner of Wolfoo.
