Recently, in the music field, many artists, especially young artists, are tending to seek out the cultural values of the nation. From here, many musical products combining folk, traditional and modern materials have been born, bringing new emotions to the public and gradually conquering international friends.

This is an encouraging direction, contributing to creating diversity and excitement for the country's musical life, while at the same time spreading traditional culture into modern life.

In 2023, the song “À Lôi” by rapper Double2T (real name Bùi Xuân Trường) was considered by many to be a musical phenomenon of the year. Specifically, after only 13 days of posting, this song ranked first in the top trending of the YouTube platform with 10 million listens, and on online music platforms, “À Lôi” gained millions of followers. The “secret” that helped “À Lôi” – a product of a completely new name – score spectacularly is thanks to the unique combination of modern style with folk and traditional materials of the Tay ethnic group.

Originally from Tuyen Quang, a mountainous province in the north, rapper Double2T has the advantage of exploiting and using ethnic musical materials and words in his raps, including "A Loi" which helps create a different musical color in the current music market. It is worth mentioning that rapper Double2T has built his own brand, with rap songs imbued with national identity, often featuring Then singing, Tinh lute, leaf horn, etc., which are calculated reasonably, helping to balance between artistic elements and audience tastes.

That is why “A Loi” along with other songs such as “Nguoi mien nui chat” and “Keo em ve lam vo” (inspired by the story Vo chong A Phu by writer To Hoai) by Double2T contribute to bringing the cultural identity of the highland people closer to the community.

Following the music scene in recent years, we can see a new wave emerging among young artists, which is the trend of exploiting folk music and traditional arts from different regions into their music products. The case of Double2T is just one of them. In previous years, the public was extremely excited by the creative MVs of Ngo Hong Quang, Tan Nhan, Hoang Thuy Linh, Duc Phuc, Hoa Minzy, Chi Pu, etc. The common point of these products is that the artists pay great attention to exploiting and using folk culture and traditional materials of the nation as well as the unique features of each region, thereby combining them with modern elements in a very creative way.

Not just a trendy, temporary trend, the investment and serious working attitude of the artists show that this is a new direction that they want to try and affirm their talent. A typical example is singer Ha Myo, after successfully experimenting with a series of songs exploiting the Xam material (a type of Vietnamese folk song, popular in the Northern Delta and midlands) such as "Xam Ha Noi", "Xam Xuan Xanh", "Xam Four Seasons of Hanoi Flowers", "Xam Xuan Chuc Phuc"... she has been more bold in exploiting traditional culture in new music products.

In early 2022, Ha Myo released the MV "Dap Nang Khot" with a very unique combination of Muong folk songs, rap in Muong language and electronic music. Not stopping there, just a short time later, she continued to release the MV "Ky su Truong Sa" which blends electronic music, rap and folk songs of the South Central Coast, with content praising the beauty of Truong Sa; the will and determination of soldiers on the islands and expressing the love of the sea and islands of the Fatherland of the young generation. Sharing about her direction, singer Ha Myo said: "I am still persistent and tireless on the path of bringing the beauty of Vietnamese folk music and traditional art to young audiences today".

It is thanks to the music products that effectively exploit the traditional cultural values of the nation from the generation of young artists that have greatly inspired the public, especially the young. These music products not only help bring unique and new musical experiences but also contribute to spreading and developing traditional cultural values in today's life, helping the public have a better approach and understanding of folk culture with a completely new perspective and emotions.

From here, the public's pride, especially the young generation's, has been gradually consolidated and increased, with the invaluable cultural treasures left by their ancestors. Musical products bearing the imprint of Vietnamese culture, when spread on social networking platforms, will also help international friends understand and love Vietnam more. Recently, the song "See Tinh" by Hoang Thuy Linh cleverly exploited the musical material of Don Ca Tai Tu, along with the unique culture of the Southwest region, conquering a large international audience and becoming a feverish phenomenon abroad.

Many famous artists and even sports stars from many countries have learned to sing along to the song and practiced the dance moves in the MV, then posted it online and attracted a large number of viewers. Even Korean volleyball player Lee Da-hyeon celebrated her victory in a match by dancing to the song “See Tinh” by Hoang Thuy Linh.

In the development of the country's music industry, the exploitation and use of folk music and traditional arts from different regions into modern music products is not a new thing. Many generations of Vietnamese musicians and singers have skillfully combined traditional music and culture with modern elements to create unique products, constantly enriching the country's music treasure.

However, in the current period, the globalization process is taking place strongly, Vietnamese music is opening up, approaching many trends and movements of world music, there are many artists who overestimate the value of world music, are absorbed in the current trends in other countries and do not properly respect the cultural values as well as traditional music of the nation. Therefore, the emergence of a generation of young artists who know how to appreciate, consciously preserve, exploit traditional values, enriching Vietnamese music is very meaningful and needs to be encouraged.

The emergence of this generation of artists with their sensitivity, abundant creativity, and timely grasp of public tastes to create many quality music products will help enrich and make Vietnam's music life more vibrant. At the same time, thanks to choosing the right direction, knowing how to filter and effectively exploit the cultural quintessence of the nation in their music products, many artists have achieved success and established a place in the hearts of audiences and listeners.

It is also necessary to add that, in addition to the encouraging factors mentioned above, there has been a phenomenon of some artists, because of following trends or lacking life experience and knowledge, hastily releasing music products that are "instant" in nature, clumsily and crudely mixing traditional music with modern music, using unrefined folk cultural materials, offensive language, etc., causing public outrage.

In fact, to incorporate traditional and folk music materials as well as traditional cultural elements into modern music products, it is necessary to have in-depth and thorough research and understanding, in order to be suitable for the content and form of expression, and to create resonance to increase effectiveness. If it is just a hasty copying and following trends to attract attention, it will certainly only produce half-hearted, superficial, poor quality products, with images and content that are not suitable for traditional customs, hybrid, and even anti-cultural. There have been many cases of excessive exploitation and variation of ancient capital, distorting traditional culture, and having counterproductive effects.

It is undeniable that combining traditional and modern cultural materials in the field of music as well as many other art forms to meet the needs of the public today is always a difficult problem. Artists' experiments do not always reap the desired success. Here, it requires artists to carefully study and be cautious when combining traditional materials with modern materials before exploiting them. Like singer Hoang Thuy Linh, to achieve success with "See Tinh", she also encountered mixed opinions in some previously released products, when she began to experiment with folk and traditional materials.

The important thing is that artists must constantly improve, learn, have an open-minded attitude, know how to listen and accept comments from experts as well as from the audience to have increasingly perfect products. According to music researcher Dang Hoanh Loan - former Deputy Director of the Vietnam Institute of Musicology, creativity needs to harmonize traditional and modern values.

Practice has proven that, in any period, folk music always has long-term, sustainable value and is an endless source of inspiration for many artists. Therefore, if each artist knows how to appreciate, consciously preserve and promote traditional values, and knows how to connect heritage values with contemporary values, it will create new values that both contribute to preserving and highlighting the unique features of traditional art, bringing traditional art closer to many audiences, especially young people, and constantly innovate to create unique products that meet the demands of the times. On the artists' side, no matter what genre of music they choose, or how they want to experiment, they also require a serious professional attitude, diligence in cultivating, learning, and appreciation of traditional cultural values of the nation. That is the foundation, the launching pad for talent and success.
