(CLO) The 34th annual report of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) shows that 2024 was one of the most dangerous years for the media, with 122 journalists murdered worldwide.

The Gaza Strip continues to be the most dangerous region for journalists, accounting for nearly half of all killings, with 64 recorded cases.

The Asia-Pacific region also saw a significant increase, with 22 journalists killed, an 83% increase from the previous year. In Africa, the number of killings of journalists rose to 10, while Europe recorded four cases, along with 43 murders of journalists that went unpunished in countries such as Kosovo, Turkey, Ukraine, Serbia, Greece, the UK and Cyprus.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, the number of killings fell slightly to nine cases compared to 11 in 2023. The Middle East and the Arab world remained a high-risk region with 77 journalists killed.

IFJ Secretary General Anthony Bellanger expressed concern about the situation in Sudan, where six journalists have been killed amid civil war. He said the international community was abandoning Sudan, putting the country’s journalists at greater risk.

The IFJ report also highlighted the threat to women journalists. The organization’s Gender Council recorded 14 female journalists killed in 2024, including those working in Palestine, Syria, Ukraine, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan and the Philippines.

The council warned that female journalists are not only vulnerable to attacks, but also at risk of being stalked, kidnapped or trafficked, especially in unstable areas.

The IFJ said that in 2024, its International Safety Fund received more than 146,000 euros in donations, of which 127,000 euros went to Palestine. The money was used to buy equipment such as first aid kits and power banks for journalists working in war zones, and to support journalists in Yemen, Türkiye and Tunisia.

IFJ President Dominique Pradalié stressed that 2024 continued to be a deadly year for journalists, with Palestine being the most dangerous region for the second year in a row.

She accused Israel of being responsible for the killings of journalists in Palestine, Lebanon and Syria, and called on the United Nations to adopt a dedicated international convention to protect journalists and hold accountable those behind these killings.
