On the morning of July 19 in Hanoi, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in coordination with the Ministry of National Defense and the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, co-organized a scientific conference with the theme "70 years of the Geneva Agreement on the cessation of hostilities in Vietnam" (July 21, 1954 - July 21, 2024).

The workshop was attended by Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thang, Politburo member, Director of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council and nearly 500 delegates who are leaders and former leaders of ministries, departments and central agencies, representatives of families of members of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam delegation participating in the Geneva Agreement negotiations, veteran officials; scientists, experts on history and international relations from research institutes and universities; party members, outstanding youth union members of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Diplomatic Academy.

In his opening speech, Comrade Bui Thanh Son, Member of the Party Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasized that the 1954 Geneva Conference was the first time Vietnam participated in a multilateral forum and directly negotiated with major countries, but Vietnamese diplomacy demonstrated the mettle and intelligence of a nation with thousands of years of culture and the art of Ho Chi Minh diplomacy.

Summarizing historical lessons from the process of negotiating, signing and implementing the 1954 Geneva Agreement has very practical significance, contributing to the research, construction and completion of the theoretical and methodological basis for foreign affairs and diplomacy in the Ho Chi Minh era as well as the construction, completion and implementation of the Party's foreign policy in the new stages of development of the country.

Speaking at the workshop, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thang, Politburo member, Director of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council, emphasized that the valuable lessons from the Geneva Agreement vividly reflected the principles, mottos, art, maturity and great contributions of Vietnamese diplomacy to the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation; affirming that the Geneva Agreement was the pinnacle of victory of Vietnamese revolutionary diplomacy in the resistance war against the French colonialists.

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thang suggested that delegates and scientists attending the Workshop continue to analyze and clarify the stature and significance of this Agreement to the Vietnamese revolutionary process and the world revolution; promote the values and lessons of the Geneva Agreement, and arouse the aspiration to build a rich, democratic, prosperous, civilized, happy country, steadily moving towards socialism.

Assessing the historical significance of the Geneva Agreement under the chairmanship of Senior Lieutenant General, Dr. Le Huy Vinh, member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Minister of National Defense, the delegates assessed that the Geneva Agreement had great significance for Vietnam, the three Indochinese countries and the national liberation movement in the world; it was the result of 9 years of arduous but heroic resistance against French colonialism by the army and people under the wise leadership of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh, marking the remarkable maturity of Vietnam's young revolutionary diplomacy.

The Geneva Agreement officially restored peace in Indochina; recognized the independence and basic national rights such as sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity of the three countries of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia.

As the first colony in Southeast Asia to defeat imperialism and regain independence and freedom for its people, Vietnam's victorious struggle was also a source of great spiritual encouragement for many Asian, African, and Latin American colonies in the national liberation movement around the world.

Discussing the application of lessons from the Geneva Agreement in planning and implementing the foreign policy of the Party and State under the chairmanship of Dr. Phan Chi Hieu, Vice Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council, President of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, the delegates highlighted many valuable lessons drawn from the process of negotiating, signing and implementing the Geneva Agreement for planning and implementing the foreign policy of our Party and State in the context of the current complicated world and regional situation.

That is a lesson about maintaining independence and autonomy to avoid unfavorable compromises; always putting national and ethnic interests above all else, adapting to all changes with constancy; combining national strength with the strength of the times to gain and mobilize sympathy and support from peace-loving and democratic movements around the world.

It is necessary to focus on enhancing potential and endogenous strength, consolidating the great national unity bloc; regularly maintaining and strengthening the Party's leadership, and harmoniously coordinating foreign affairs fields, between Party foreign affairs, State diplomacy and people's diplomacy, between diplomacy and the military to create a combined strength to serve the cause of national construction and defense.

Training a team of foreign affairs cadres, especially in negotiation skills and behavior in international situations; fostering in Vietnamese youth and young generations a passionate patriotism, a steadfast belief in the Party's ideals, a spirit of initiative, dedication and not being afraid of hardship, and a willingness to contribute to the Fatherland.
