Mr Trump's campaign has once again drawn criticism as the former president and his allies have unleashed a barrage of racist and hateful rhetoric.

Former President Donald Trump's campaign rally in Madison Square, New York on October 27 was filled with anger, racist language, insults and threats aimed at immigrants, according to the Guardian . With just over a week to go until Election Day, Mr. Trump used the event in New York to once again assert that he was fighting against "the enemy from within" America. The former president promised to carry out "the largest deportation program in history".

Hostility and Insults

At the October 27 rally, Tucker Carlson, a former Fox News anchor, mocked Harris’s race and made highly offensive comments about former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Trump’s 2016 presidential candidate. Tony Hinchliffe, a podcast producer with a history of racist comments, described Puerto Rico, a territory of 3.2 million Americans, as a “shithole island.” Hinchliffe also made lewd comments about Latina women, which were applauded by the crowd.

Radio producer Sid Rosenberg also insulted Hillary Clinton, saying "illegal immigrants are getting everything they want." Republican David Rem, a childhood friend of Trump's, called Harris "evil." Rem later announced he would run for mayor of New York City. Trump's speech was not much different from his allies. The former president continued his attacks on immigrants, claiming "Venezuelan gangs" had "taken over Times Square." Trump also accused the Biden administration of not having enough money to deal with the hurricane that hit the United States because "they spent all their money on illegal immigrants, flying them into the United States on luxury planes." Trump once again spoke of fighting the "enemy within" - a group of rival politicians he has threatened to use the military to suppress immediately after his re-election. "We're not just running against Kamala, we're running against something bigger than Joe and Kamala, much more powerful than them, which is the ferocious radical leftist machine that runs the Democratic Party," Trump said. This is the third time Trump has held a campaign rally in New York this election season, even though the former president is unlikely to win the state. Trump has repeatedly described New York in the darkest and most negative terms, such as "a rotten paradise for drug addicts, gang members, illegal immigrants living in luxury apartments" while veterans live a life of homelessness. New York is Trump's hometown. Experts say the resentment toward his hometown stems from recent bitterness, when a state court convicted him of 34 criminal counts while the Trump Organization was fined for tax fraud. Mr. Trump continued to criticize President Biden's policies for causing crime to "rise to the ceiling" in New York, while police data showed the opposite trend.

Democrats react fiercely

The Republican campaign immediately condemned the hateful and insulting comments made during the rally on the night of October 27. "This is how they think of us. Vote for Kamala Harris," music star Ricky Martin wrote on Instagram. A Trump campaign spokesperson later explained that the comments "do not reflect the views of former President Trump." However, insulting comments like those on October 27 could cause problems in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, where a large portion of Latino voters have Puerto Rican roots. Both Democrats and Republicans are trying to appeal to Latino voters.

On October 27, Ms. Harris visited a Puerto Rican restaurant in Philadelphia, where the US vice president said he would establish an "economic opportunity working group" for Puerto Rico.
