Trudeau's trip comes days after President-elect Donald Trump threatened to impose 25% import tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods.
According to AFP, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau arrived in Palm Beach, Florida, USA on November 29. US and Canadian media reported that the Canadian leader came to meet President-elect Donald Trump at the Mar-a-Lago resort.
Data from Flightradar shows that the Canadian leader's plane landed at Palm Beach International Airport on the afternoon of November 29 local time.
CBC (Canada) reported that Prime Minister Trudeau will have dinner with Mr. Trump. Canadian Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, who accompanied Mr. Trudeau, will also be present.
The Canadian Prime Minister's Office did not immediately confirm the unannounced trip.
The Canadian leader’s trip comes after Trump announced that once he takes office, he will impose a 25% tariff on goods imported from Mexico and Canada until illegal immigration and drug trafficking into the US are stopped. He also announced a 10% import tax on Chinese goods.
Mexico and Canada are the two largest trading partners of the United States. Such tariffs would likely crack the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement that was negotiated and built by Mr. Trump during his first term as president.
More than three-quarters of Canada's exports — worth $423 billion — went to the United States last year, and nearly two million Canadian jobs depend on trade.
Canada is considering retaliatory tariffs against the United States, a government source told AFP.
Some have suggested that Mr Trump’s tariff announcement may be just a blustering threat or a “opening shot” for future trade negotiations, but Mr Trudeau dismissed those notions when he spoke to reporters in Prince Edward Island.
"With Donald Trump, when he makes statements like that, he has a plan to carry them out. There's no doubt about that!" - Mr. Trudeau commented.
