“Person of the Year” is awarded to the individual or group that has had the greatest impact on global affairs, whether positive or negative. To commemorate the event, Mr. Trump will ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange.
Trump’s selection as Time’s “Person of the Year” for 2024 is not only a new recognition but also a continuation of his first honor in 2016, when he unexpectedly took office as president. This time, the announcement marks his remarkable return and his potential to change the political landscape of America.
The title of “Person of the Year” has become a symbol of the fame that Mr. Trump has always craved. Despite his frequent criticism of the media, Mr. Trump has regularly given interviews to major media outlets, including Time, most recently in November.
On the same day, Time magazine published an exclusive interview with Mr. Donald Trump after naming him “Person of the Year,” in which the US President-elect outlined his ambitious plans for his second term, focusing on issues ranging from foreign affairs to domestic reform.
Regarding Ukraine, Mr. Trump expressed deep concern about casualties on both sides and strongly criticized Ukraine's attack deep into Russian territory. "This is a serious mistake, causing unnecessary escalation of the war," he emphasized.
Mr Trump pledged to negotiate a lasting peace deal. Asked if he would “abandon” Ukraine, Mr Trump said: “I want to make a deal, and the only way to make a deal is not to abandon it.”
Regarding the Middle East, Mr. Trump appeared more optimistic about the possibility of resolving the conflict. He recalled the tragedy of October 7, 2023 as "a terrible day for the whole world" and revealed that there was positive progress in peace negotiations, although he refused to share details of the conversation with Prime Minister Netanyahu.
Regarding Iran, Mr. Trump warned that "any situation can happen", while emphasizing the success in restraining Iran in his first term when "they no longer have money to fund Hamas and Hezbollah".
The president-elect has said border control and energy will be his top priorities as soon as he takes office. Mr Trump has said he will use the military and National Guard if necessary to stop an “invasion” of migrants from 182 countries, and has threatened to impose heavy tariffs on countries that do not take back their deported citizens.
Regarding education reform, Mr. Trump plans to "virtually close" the federal Department of Education, transferring management to the states. The billionaire is confident that "we will cut costs in half while still ensuring quality on par with Norway or Finland."
Referring to legal cases, Mr. Trump pledged to consider pardoning those involved in the January 6 incident within the first hour of taking office, but only for those who did not commit acts of violence.
Trump also expressed confidence in the next generation of the “MAGA” movement, especially his children. The president-elect shared: “Don Jr. can do well, especially in some areas. Eric is very capable. And Ivanka can be a superstar in politics if she wants to.”
When asked about the secret to his success, Mr. Trump said that the American people crave a good life with reasonable prices and guaranteed security. He affirmed: "The Republican Party has become the party of common sense. We bring practical solutions to the people."
Finally, sharing about the failed assassination attempt during the election campaign, Mr. Trump admitted that “this was a bad moment” for America, but it helped change the thinking of many people.
The nearly hour-long interview was conducted by top Time magazine editors at Mr Trump's Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida on November 25.
