The Wall Street Journal on July 15 quoted a number of informed sources as saying that Mr. Musk pledged to contribute about $45 million/month to American PAC - a political action committee supporting Mr. Trump's US presidential campaign.
According to the sources, American PAC focuses on urging voters to register to vote, conduct early voting and vote by mail for the general election this November.
In addition to billionaire Musk, major donors to American PAC include Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale, former US Ambassador to Canada Kelly Craft and two cryptocurrency investors Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss.
Previously, on July 13, after the former US President was grazed by a bullet in the ear but luckily survived an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, the founder of the electric car company Tesla declared his "full support" for Mr. Trump's candidacy for US president.
Elon Musk, the world’s richest man with an estimated net worth of $250 billion, has been increasingly vocal about his goodwill toward Trump as he prepares to run for president in 2024. In March, the two met face-to-face over breakfast at billionaire Nelson Peltz’s Florida mansion.
Although the US limits donations to $3,300 per person, loopholes in the campaign finance system allow large political donors to set up and contribute to PACs to support candidates.
Meanwhile, the Republican National Convention, taking place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from July 15-18, adopted the 2024 Platform, which includes changes on a number of domestic and foreign issues.
On foreign policy, the Republicans pledge to prevent World War III and restore peace in Europe and the Middle East, but do not directly mention Russia or Ukraine. The document does not offer any explanation of how these goals will be achieved.
The Republican Party also pledges to strengthen alliances by ensuring allies meet their obligations to contribute to the common defense. The platform affirms "standing with Israel."
On domestic issues, the document addresses a shift in stance on abortion regulation - one of the most controversial issues in the US. Accordingly, the Republican Party abandons its long-standing support for abortion restrictions, leaving it up to states to set their own regulations on the issue. The platform also drops opposition to same-sex marriage.
However, this year's platform uses stronger language on a number of issues, including immigration and education, with a pledge to cut federal funding to any school the government believes is promoting inappropriate content on racial, sexual or political issues.
The document also reflects Mr Trump's hardline stance on immigration, with a pledge to close the border, stop migrants and carry out the largest deportation operation ever.
On the economy, Republicans pledge to “cut regulations,” cut taxes, “end inflation,” and “make America the world’s dominant energy producer.”
However, according to climate activists, the platform makes no mention of climate or clean energy.
The Republican Party Platform is a set of principles, goals, and major political positions that the organization intends to pursue. The document is typically reviewed every four years to reflect current priorities and changes in public opinion.
A week earlier, the Republican Party Platform Committee had approved the platform, drafted by Donald Trump’s aides. The 16-page platform included 20 action points that appeared frequently in the presidential candidate’s campaign speeches.
