Learning from the experience of water shortage for giant freshwater prawn farming in the dry season of 2024, people in the U Minh Thuong buffer zone (Kien Giang) now have a good way of farming, releasing prawns early, feeding them properly, treating water well, ensuring family economic profits.

On February 28, returning to Cong Su hamlet, An Minh Bac commune, U Minh Thuong district (where a landslide occurred due to lack of water in 2024), it was easy to see that the water level in the canal was gradually decreasing; the coconut trees on both sides of the canal had their roots exposed; some locals took advantage of the opportunity to pump water from the canal into the square to raise giant freshwater prawns.
Mr. Vo Phan Khoi - a giant freshwater prawn farmer in Cong Su hamlet, An Minh Bac commune - said that starting from around September and October 2024, the locality has closed the sluice to avoid salinity, ensuring a source of fresh water for local people to raise giant freshwater prawns and grow vegetables.
The dry season of 2025 will be long and hot, with little unseasonal rain, so Mr. Khoi predicts that the water source in the canal will dry up earlier than every year.
"I see that this canal has dried up by more than 1 meter compared to Tet. Every day I see the water level in the canal is about 20cm lower. Soon I think it will dry up to the bottom of the canal," said Mr. Khoi.
Learning from the experience of freshwater shortage, in September 2024, Mr. Khoi took the opportunity to renovate 15 hectares of land to raise giant freshwater prawns. He planned to raise giant freshwater prawns 1 month earlier than before.
To ensure clean water, Mr. Khoi occasionally treats the water source and feeds the giant freshwater prawns with rice, ripe bananas and dried coconut in appropriate quantities.

"I feed them with a combination of rice, ripe bananas, and dried coconuts to reduce farming costs and reduce water damage. If the water is good, the shrimp will grow quickly, look shiny, and sell for a good price. This shrimp crop, I harvested about 1.7 tons of whiteleg shrimp in the first batch and sold them for 102,000 VND/kg, so the profit is attractive.
Next month I plan to harvest giant freshwater prawns. Even if the canal water dries up by then, I won't be afraid," said Mr. Khoi.

"The cooperative has 10 members with a total area of about 30 hectares of green-legged shrimp farming combined with white-legged shrimp farming. This year, thanks to proactively storing water and releasing green-legged shrimp early, some people have harvested attractive profits, stabilizing their family economy," informed Mr. Ho Van Nhut - head of the green-legged shrimp farming cooperative in Cong Su hamlet.
Previously, relevant departments and localities submitted to the People's Committee of Kien Giang province to soon implement the flood and drought prevention project in the U Minh Thuong buffer zone.
In particular, investing in the construction of Tau Luy canal culvert, canal 9 culvert and building 8 local pumping stations to enhance water regulation and supply in the dry season and prevent flooding for the U Minh Thuong buffer zone in the rainy season, helping people with agricultural production and stabilizing family life.
