On January 20, according to Tuoi Tre Online , in the shrimp-rice land of U Minh Thuong district (Kien Giang province), local people harvested rice and caught giant freshwater prawns in the fields.
After harvesting the giant freshwater prawn crop, Ms. Nguyen Thi Diem, a resident of Hoa Chanh commune, said that her 30 hectares of land for raising giant freshwater prawns had just been sold for 140,000 - 150,000 VND/kg of shrimp, an increase of 30,000 - 40,000 VND/kg compared to the same period last year.
Selling giant freshwater prawns at this price, Ms. Diem is excited because she has profit to enjoy the spring and welcome Tet.
“The price of giant freshwater prawns is good this year, and everyone is happy. After harvesting the prawns, I also help with the drying of giant freshwater prawns to earn extra money for Tet,” said Ms. Diem.

Similarly, Mr. Nguyen Minh Thuan, owner of a one-sun dried green-legged shrimp facility in Hoa Chanh commune, said that his family currently makes many shrimp products such as one-sun dried green-legged shrimp, dried green-legged shrimp, shrimp floss, dried shrimp and one-sun dried white-legged shrimp.
Over the past few days, Mr. Thuan and everyone else has been cutting the claws and peeling the shrimp. They then season them and dry them in the sun to deliver them to customers who have placed orders.
The price of giant freshwater prawns currently ranges from 140,000 to 150,000 VND/kg. About 10kg of fresh giant freshwater prawns can produce more than 1kg of sun-dried shrimp, which is sold for 1.2 million VND/kg.
“I make sun-dried giant freshwater prawns all year round, and especially during Tet, I make a lot. Most of my customers are regulars, some of whom order 5-10kg to give as gifts or to eat. Near Tet, customers order a lot, but I don’t buy enough fresh giant freshwater prawns to make them.
This year, I sold double the amount of sun-dried giant freshwater prawns last year. I think it's quite good because it not only increases the value but also contributes to expanding the consumption of this giant freshwater prawn," Mr. Thuan shared.
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Kien Giang province said that by 2024, the local shrimp farming area will be about 136,000 hectares. People in U Minh Thuong, An Bien and An Minh districts have developed many shrimp-rice models, so their lives have been improved.
