(Dan Tri) - Apricot growers in An Nhon town, Binh Dinh province are busy taking care of their apricot gardens in the final stages, hoping for a successful Tet season.

Farmers in the Central region's yellow apricot capital "race" to Tet (Video: Doan Cong).

According to Dan Tri reporters, in all the apricot gardens in An Nhon town (Binh Dinh), which is known as the largest apricot capital in the Central region, families are busy taking care of the apricot trees in time for the Lunar New Year. Meticulously plucking each old apricot leaf, Ms. Tran Thi Ly (39 years old, Trung Dinh village, Nhon An commune, An Nhon town), shared: "On the night of the 30th of the Lunar New Year, sometimes I am still on the street selling apricot trees. Farmers are still suffering so much, so I just hope that the apricot trees bloom right on Tet and have many customers, that's enough to make me happy". According to apricot growers in An Nhon town, around the beginning of December every year, every gardener focuses on removing leaves from the trees so that they can sell flowers in time to serve people celebrating Tet. Mr. Phan Van Bao (65 years old, in Hao Duc village, Nhon An commune, An Nhon town) said that his family has about 3,000 apricot pots that are 4-10 years old, but so far no traders have come to deposit to buy them.

According to Mr. Bao, picking (stripping) mai leaves is considered an important step, but in addition to experience, the success/failure of the crop also depends on the weather. This year, gardeners picked the leaves early because of the prolonged rain and cold. "In addition to care techniques, mai trees depend a lot on the weather. If the leaves are picked early, when the weather is warm and sunny, the flowers will bloom fully, but when it is cold and windy, the flowers will not bloom, which means a lost Tet," said Mr. Bao. According to many farmers, the yellow mai trees are picked at this time to sell to the markets in the northern provinces, because it is cold in the North. In addition to the labor mobilized in the house, garden owners also have to hire outside workers to pick mai leaves with a salary of 180,000-200,000 VND/day.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Ha (39 years old, in Trung Dinh village, Nhon An commune) said that this year the economic situation is still difficult so up to now there have been no traders coming to buy apricot blossoms. Currently, only a few people come to see the apricot blossoms, inquire about prices but have not bought or deposited money in advance like every year. "The weather is getting warmer. Such weather is favorable for apricot growers. We hope that from now until Tet there will be no prolonged cold spell, then the apricot blossoms will definitely bloom in time for Tet. The whole year of hard work growing and caring for apricot blossoms only looks forward to the last few days of the year, so everyone wants to sell as many apricot blossoms as possible," Mr. Ha said.
An Nhon town, Binh Dinh province is considered the largest yellow apricot capital in the Central region, with thousands of households growing apricot. The area of yellow apricot cultivation is about 145 hectares, concentrated in Nhon An and Nhon Phong communes. In recent years, the yellow apricot growing communes of An Nhon town have achieved revenue from selling Tet apricots of 100-130 billion VND/year. The Tet apricot growing profession contributes to increasing income and effectively solving employment for people in the town.
