Durian growers in the mountainous district of Khanh Son (Khanh Hoa) are very happy because durian prices have "hit their peak" for the first time.
Currently, the price of grade 1 durian bought at the garden is nearly 100,000 VND/kg, the remaining types range from 75,000 - 85,000 VND/kg; while at the end of July 2023, the price of durian only fluctuated from 25,000 - 35,000 VND/kg.
Mr. Nguyen Binh (residing in To Hap town, Khanh Son district) said that the beginning of August every year is the main durian harvest season.
“Every year, the price fluctuates between 45,000 and 65,000 VND/kg. This year, durian prices have increased even though it is just the main season, and traders come to the garden to order. If you sell in bulk (the whole garden), the price is already 85,000 VND/kg,” said Mr. Binh.
Khanh Hoa farmers excited because durian price "peaks" for the first time |
Ms. Nguyen Nhung has 2 hectares of durian, which this year yielded about 30 tons of fruit. With the current garden price, Ms. Nhung has a profit of hundreds of millions of dong.
Khanh Son district is the locality with the largest durian area in Khanh Hoa province with about 2,500 hectares, of which 1,200 hectares are in the fruiting period; mainly distributed in communes such as Son Lam, Thanh Son, Son Binh, Ba Cum Bac, Ba Cum Nam.
It's the main season so every day there are hundreds of tons of durian officially exported to China. |
Mr. Tran Thanh Tung, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Khanh Son District, said he was also surprised when the price of durian "hit its peak". Khanh Son District has two types of durian with the largest area, Ri6 and Monthong. Every year, the price of Ri6 ranges from 35,000 - 42,000 VND/kg, while Monthong is the highest at 50,000 - 53,000 VND/kg. The high purchase price combined with traders buying at the garden makes farmers make a big profit.
Khanh Son District has had two more units granted durian growing area codes for official export to China, namely Dien Thanh Cooperative (Son Hiep Commune) and Bay Ho Khanh Son Durian Cooperative (Son Lam Commune); bringing the total number of units, organizations and individuals granted growing area codes to 6, with a total area of nearly 180 hectares. Currently, dozens of other applications in this locality have also been submitted to request growing area codes for official export.
Monthong durian is a specialty of Khanh Son mountainous district in particular and Khanh Hoa province in general. |
According to the leader of Khanh Son District People's Committee, durian prices are high partly because they are given a growing area code for official export to China, so they do not go through many intermediaries and are forced to lower prices.
To maintain the Khanh Son durian brand as well as ensure standards to meet the conditions for official export to China, the Khanh Son District People's Committee on the one hand propagates, on the other hand requires units and organizations that have been granted growing area codes to comply with regulations, especially ensuring records, procedures, compliance with periodic and ad hoc monitoring; ensuring conditions for controlling harmful microorganisms at low levels, using pesticides according to the regulations of the importing country.
